Seems like a heftier price than the Backes trade. Unless I'm mistaken, Eriksson's cap with this retention would be less than Backes', and with only a few months extra term, the actual money paid would be quite similar. If you consider the contracts a wash (which, again, I might be missing something here), the Bruins deal - Kase for Andersson + 1st - seems like a bargain compared to the Canucks - Larsson for Stecher + 1st. I guess times are tougher now with the pandemic and likely flat cap so teams are more desperate, but Idk...

Backes is one year while Eriksson is two. Eriksson might also have to be protected with Seattle too.

Backes was acquired at the deadline and has next year as well - that's why I said a few extra months of term. Also, Eriksson doesn't have to be protected.

You're giving up a first to sign Markstrom, Toffoli, and Tanev, filling the #3LD with an NHL-quality young defenseman with term, and escaping a $4 million cap hit.

(But I have the feeling that you were looking at the effective net, whereas I'm talking about "the gross.")

Very accurate as always. I'd only add the small point that there is a difference between a 2020 first and a 2021 first (which might become a 2022 first).

You could also argue that since the cap isn’t rising that like when the Backes trade went through that it’s going to be harder to acquire. I wouldn’t mind taking Eriksson for a future first with no retention but we will see what Van does in the upcoming months.

Wasn’t sure if he had an NMC or not, makes sense.

could be a FA, or a young player in the system. doesn't matter. just because we don't have a lot of depth doesn't mean we want to take Sutter's contract and get almost nothing for doing so.

all things considered to move Ericksson, Sutter or Baertschi i think VAN should move picks over prospects. they have an established core of great players and now need to try win, prospects in the pipeline will keep the window open for winning over the next 3-5 years.
so within that span to give up 1st round picks is not as much of an issue as some people think.
i think it's quite likely that VAN will pay a team to take a dump. to give a 1st rd pick to be able to re-sign Markstrom and Tofolli and maybe Tanev too? that's an easy yes for me

You don't have a "young player in the system" who's ready for the NHL at RW.

"almost nothing"?? You get the 75th overall pick instead of the 124th.

Yeah, I forgot that Vancouver's 2021 1st hangs in the balance right now.
