Leafs can't totally ripped on that Jones trade. Two years of Jones for all of that. No thanks. More belief that a RHD is gonna change the Leafs fortunes. Jones hasn't done it previously with his teams.
The offer above is much stronger than most that are made by Leaf's fans for Jones.
Having a ton of offensive firepower is great, but the old adage in just about every sport is true...defence wins championships.
CBJ traded away their future #1C (Johanssen) for Jones, and actually won that trade, as Jones has become a much better player at his position than Johanssen.
That being said, i respectfully disagree that Jones hasn't "changed the fortune" of his prior teams.
The reason CBJ got Jones was the backlog at the position in Nashville, they focused on stocking defensive talent and Jones was viewed as "expendable" behind Weber, Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, etc. (a very solid defence worthy of a cup). Too many other factors go into the equasion too....scoring, goaltending, team chemistry, etc.
In order to obtain a player like Jones though, a team would have to overpay, by a lot, to entice the Jackets to make the deal.
In the end, I agree that: 1) giving up that much to obtain Jones would not be worth it if you cannot lock him down long term with his next contract; & 2) Jackets will not want to part with Jones even for this package because their plan is to keep him for the long term, he is that good.
