I can't see the Canes doing this trade since I think it's a flecce for San Jose, but assuming they do accept, here is some advice I'd give...

- Khudobin and Labanc both don't get a cent over 4 million and I think you overpaid Fleury, so you're saving yourself about 1M+ there (Use the money to sign Marleau)
- Chekhovich isn't NHL ready. I'd replace him with a better fringe NHL player.
- I think Geekie would be a good 3C and you'd save money instead of signing Soderberg.
- With the ~$4 million you have left, sign someone like Namestnikov/Fast/Galchenyuk/Sheary for a top 6 wing role
- Your lines probably end up looking something like this:

Niederreiter - Couture - Meier
Galchenyuk - Hertl - Labanc
Sorensen - Geekie - Marleau
Gregor - Handemark - Gambrell

Vlasic - Karlsson
Simek - Burns
Fleury - Ferraro

Khudobin
Jones

Canes take on Kane, get no incentive for doing so, and give up a first too?

While I have considered a Kane and Fleury deal for Kane, I have struggled to find the right piece that makes it worth it to the Canes.

lets do a 3 year total since you wanna use 3 years. ill include the year he got trade from the sabres... 15-16: 20 - 15 35 points in 65 games 7.4 shot %, 16-17: 28 - 15 43 points in 70 games 10.8 shot %, 17-18 20 - 20 40 points in 61 games 8.8 shot % with buffalo. Now with SJS: 17-18: 9 - 5 14 points in 17 games 11.3 shot % . 18-19: 30 - 26 56 points in 75 games 11.2 shot %, 19-20 26 - 21 47 in 64 12 shot%. He became a true 30 goal scorer with the sharks. his value hasnt decreased. its significantly increased. His contract is just alot for some teams to want to swallow.

you are quite wrong on Kane's value increasing. The terrible contract absolutely kills any value increase due to production increase. He has a negative value, like the vast majority of the Sharks' contracts.

at worst its a net even between production and contract. that doesnt negate his value on the ice. its not like hes lucic out there. does it have the potential to get that bad. oh yeah. but right now. its par for the course in terms of $$ and production. alot of people dont like the player, which you are more than welcome to that opinion. I think his play style resembles what hockey was, vs what its becoming.

He is currently worth close to 7 million. But the last 3 years of his contract is where the forward slide happens and why he has negative value. He barely meets the value now and then he is going to slide. Add in his MNTC where he can submit a list of 3 teams he can be traded to. That severely limits a team's chance of moving him later if he doesnt fit the team or the cap situation.

Lets add in his style. typical power forwards like himself tend to fall off faster due to injuries.

If he wasnt 7 million for 5 more years, I would love to have him on the Canes. 3 more years, I could tolerate it but 5 is too much risk.

Yeah but 3 more years takes him to age 31 his cap hit is probably lower to get the extra 2 years... now do i think he actually gets traded away from SJS, no, no i dont. But this package actually isnt that bad. its actually kind of what the canes are missing. They dont have that gritty player to get greasy during the playoffs.

The difference in Nino and Kane isnt Fluery and 1st. Soumela as a 26 year old AHLer (if he doesnt go back to Finland) who carries 0 value. Nino and Kane were pretty similar last season (56 to 53). Kane did outperform Nino this season by 18 points in raw numbers. Kane also played 5 more minutes a game that Nino. If take Kane's PPMP (points per minute played) of .0376 and multiply it by the number of minutes Nino played, the point difference is a much less 8. The thing that the Canes like about Nino is he stays out of the box (Kane almost 3 times the PIM). The difference in 8 more points, 80 more hits, and 80 more PIMs isnt worth Fluery and a 1st
Again any positive point performance is negated as he costs 1.75 million more in cap, has 3 more years on the deal, has a 3 team only trade MNTC, and is a year older. So yes the package is that bad. I dont know that I would trade Nino for Kane straight up for this point. Love his style and him next to Trocheck and Necas could be a force. It is a lot of risk to take by a management team that wouldnt even take a risk to pay Lehner what he was asking.
