The definition of a generational player is a player who comes around once every 10-15 years. The absolute best player in that time frame. Crosby was/is that player for his time frame and McDavid is/will be that player for his time frame.

Ovechkin is right behind Crosby, but by definition there can only be one. MacKinnon is probably 2nd behind McDavid, but again there can only be one. MacKinnon also wasn't a phenom in the league at 18 years old like those other three.
