Do you think Dubas can call up Jarmo and tell him to look at the public analytics models that show Jones is an average player, and that will convince him to trade him? Or are we just talking hypotheticals in nichushkin > draisaitl world.

I LOVE logic!

Thank you bro!

My god, imagine loosing Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel and wondering why your PP suddenly is subpar. How can you possibly say CBJ's defense was just as good without Jones when they went 3-10 after his injury? I honestly can't wait for him to make Toronto's offense look like pushovers this playoffs

CBJ's pp is slightly better without him. That is PP2 after all but he still is bad on the pp. hes one of the reasons it isnt that good

Let me say this for every hockey fan here ATTENTION LEAF FANS in order to acquire talent you need to give talent an Columbus won’t move jones. Nylander plus a 1st plus something else gets it done but this package certain doesn’t. Columbus laughs and blocks your number

Except that Seth Jones is not nearly as good as his reputation. Top 4 Dman for sure but not Nylander + 1st + another piece valuable.

Thats fair enough. You would like that article then, check out Jfresh I think is his handle on twitter, he basically argues your same point.

JFresh's article, despite the seriously clickbaity headline, comes to almost reasonable conclusions - he argues merely that Jones shouldn't be considered elite because he feels there's deficiencies in Jones' game whose existence is hinted at by advanced statistics. The OP, by contrast, is insisting Jones "has the potential" to become a second-pairing guy. Not that he's presently a second-pairing guy - that he might be that someday if he improves. JFresh got piled on a little excessively. This guy is a pathetic troll who deserves every bit of scorn and dismissal he's getting and more besides.

By the logic used by the OP, we don't actually need those offensive pieces, because we already have Bjorkstrand who is an overwhelmingly superior player to Marner in every possible respect.

(Don't get me wrong; Bjorkstrand was definitely our best forward this past season. But there's using advanced stats to inform an evaluation, and then there's using them as a substitute for an evaluation.)

bjorkstrand is very good- one of the most underrated players in the nhl. Marner is still better though, he has proven hes been able to outperform his metrics by such a large extent compared to bjork who is very good but not as good.

Don't get me wrong Seth Jones is an extremely talented player. In the 17-18 season the praise he was getting at the time as one of the best defenceman in the league was warranted because he was performing like one. Since then however, his overall production has been nothing special, average quite honestly. Now I am not saying he can't get back to that level because he certainly can, but as of right now he is no way a so called top 5 defenceman in the league.

I don't have him either (in my top5) but calm down with the analytics

The market value viewed by analytics (if I can say it like that) isn't the same than the real NHL market value. No way CBJ accepts that, even if you show them Jones' analytics, they won't care about that.

But @Jack_ just starts saying " oh you know he isn't that good " and that's it

So I'm glad we can all agree that CBJ hangs up the phone instantly regardless of people's opinions on whether Jones is good or not.

youre talking like Jones is some sort of great 1st pairing defenseman and Kerfoot/Kapanen arent worth anything

Kerfoot had 9 goals and less points than Jones lmao. And Kapanen is a 40 point player. You are talking like they are some sort of great top 6 guys

I know Jones has a bad season.... but come on. You aren’t trading Crosby for Danault. Though Danault has better advanced stats..... come on dude... get back to planet earth.

Bjorkstrand had a significantly higher GAR than Marner this year and a higher Corsi rating. How can you sit here and say Marner is exempt from advanced stats then go and use them to define Jones? That's pure ignorance.

of course im trolling people. on CF people think Jones is Baby Jesus 2.0 for some reason when its very clear he isnt. ive never said he isnt talented but besides one extremly good season Jones hasnt been that good and it bugs me that people think hes a top 10 defenseman because of 17-18

Yeah I realize that, but compared to other sports the analytics in hockey are far behind. The reason why they are becoming popular is because people realize that your eyes only see roughly 15% of what the player actually does on the ice through the course of the game. The eye test is great to see why a player does or does not have good analytics. In Jones case it's because he hasn't moved the puck that effectively in transition and hasn't been great in the offensive end. He has been around average defensively as well. Now I am not disagreeing with you. Jones percieved value around the league is sky high. They probably could get Marner or Nylander and a 1st plus. It would be hard to call that a win for the leafs at this time though. I think the anayltics departments on teams are gaining more traction. That is why Ristolainen hasn't been traded yet. In the past a big right shot defenceman would have been dealt already and for a big price (like Ehlers or someone like that).

Like I understand the entire post is troll, i knew from the beginning but there has to be some realism if you want to be persistent on arguing some things.
For example:
Jones had a Corsi Player Rating (CPR) of 78.31 this year, which is 4th amoung RD league wide, Rielly had a CPR of 75.31 this year for 14th amoung LD.
Jones had a GAR of 4.5 and WAR of 0.8 this year and Rielly had a GAR of 4.4 and WAR of 0.8, so according to EW they were roughly equally as relevant this year

That depends. On the topic of Bjorkstrand versus Marner earlier, were we discussing Marner, or Marner's reputation?
