If thats the only issue I take it. But whoever might be in that spot as 13th forward. If he disagrees with 700k, move him for late pick and sign someone for 700k

He would be available at 39. He is a top-15 talent, but I think he would be there at 39.

He is worth a late 1st. Players like him go for somewhere around that.

No thanks from Avs. Would much rather keep our 1st and draft someone who can help the team on an ELC when Mackinnon gets his new contract in 2023.

Also, moving from #27 to #39 is way too big of a jump. According to HockeyProspects.com there are 27 "A" prospects in this draft, so there will definitely be a very good player at #27. Only way I'd trade down from there is to somewhere like #32-33 and if there are a few fallers that I'd be happy with, and for a slightly better pick than #61. For example, trade with Ottawa for #33 and #53 (perhaps include a 4th going back).

I think you're overrating the return Kapanen can get, for three reasons:

1. Flat cap league - it will be a buyers market, so prices for players like Kapanen will be lower than you think.
2. Expansion draft - makes ED exempt assets more valuable than players that need protection (especially middle 6ers).
3. The 2020 draft is deep, which raises the value of a late 1st compared to weak draft years.

Im not.

1. flat cap league actually benefits the value of lower cap hitted great players like Kapanen. Therefore making his value bigger.
2. this might be correct. But the value difference would not be that much different.
3. it doesnt. Generally deep draft raises values of picks in middle rounds, 1st round and early 2nd round picks values stay the same.

That's for them to decide. Im just saying I'd take the 27th over 39th and 61st.

1. Middle 6 forwards will likely be the hardest hit by a flat cap in free agency. So why should a team like Colorado pay a 1st for Kapanen when they can sign an UFA like Namestnikov for a comparable AAV? Trade prices will also be lower, and there will be all sorts of deals to be had from teams with cap issues. I'd rather pay a 2nd + 3rd sort of package for Killorn or Palat.

2. It would absolutely be significant. Acquiring Kapanen means that Colorado would be exposing another one of Donskoi, Compher, Jost, Nichuskin. And I don't think it's good asset management to throw a 1st away when it means that we'd be exposing a better player in the ED.

3. According to HockeyProspects.com, there are 27 "A" prospects in this draft. So pick #27 is a strong 1st. And if the rest of the draft is stronger too, then a 2nd round pick also carries more weight in a trade for Kapanen.

Whatever the case, Sakic is gun-shy with his 1sts, and he is very cognisant of the importance of ELC talent going forwards, so I don't foresee him trading a 1st for a player that isn't even a lock to play in our top 6. If we're trading that pick it will more likely be in a package (1st + prospect) for an established top 6 forward.

Kapanen isn’t worth a first. Burakovsky who had better production through first 4 years netted a 2nd and 3rd.

2011
Versteeg to PHI for 1st and 3rd

2012
Less valuable Gaustad went to NSH with 4th for 1st

2018
Evander Kane went for 1st, 4th and prospect

2018
Less valuable Ryan Hartman went with 5th for 1st, 4th and Ejdsell

Just some examples of mid-6 scorers and powerforwards going for first round picks.
