Detroit declines, makes no sense for them

I like Hanifin, but Detroit's not trading Mantha for him.

Why? Detroit needs top 4 LHD.

They need top 6 forwards way more.

Detroit should be signing Mantha to an 8 year extension not trading him for a dman.

Yeah no worries. I figured the Wings seem to have some nice forwards coming along but the D looks pretty sparce, especially left D.

Classic young top 4 D for young top 6 forward trade.

Looking at this I would say we need some solid LHD options. Yes some of them are promising but prospects bust all of the time.

Top 6F - Larkin, Bertuzzi, Zadina, 2020 1st, Rasmussen, Fabbri, Veleno
RHD - Hronek, Seider, Tuomisto, Lindstrom
LHD - DeKeyser, McIsaac, Johansson, Cholowski

Taking depth into account and that defenseman take longer to develop into impact players it does make sense to do a top 6 winger for top 4 d swap. In addition, young top 4 d are harder to acquire than wingers. Look at the available free agent wingers (eg Hoffman, Dadanov) if we need more firepower.

Based on this I don’t think you can definitively say we need them “that much more.”

Yeah and Zadina and Veleno could be busts too so then you'd be wishing you didn't trade Mantha.
Hoffman and Dadonov are 30, no it makes more sense to extend Mantha long term and sign a couple of the many free agent dmen to bridge the gap till some of the Wings young dmen are established and keep drafting a dmen or two every year to keep replenishing the stock.
This idea that we have a hole over here in the lineup so we'll fill it by creating another hole somewhere else in the lineup makes zero sense imo.
If you trade Mantha for Hanifin you slightly improve the defense but you create a massive hole up front and take away a significantamount of offense, it's so not worth it.

I highly doubt Zadina will be a “bust” considering the development he’s put in and what he showed last year playing with garbage centers. With Veleno there absolutely is a possibility of him never making in the league.

My whole argument with the Wing posters before me was they said it wasn’t a need or we wouldn’t trade him for a defenseman. It absolutely is a need. What you’re explaining is we would be robbing Peter to pay Paul which is completely different than what was previously posted. Again I’m not saying I would do the swap but I’d definitely listen to the offer and adjust it as a base for a deal.

I hear ya, just think defense is a bit overrated, think you can fill defense easier then getting good forwards and a team can get by with an average defense, as a Jets fan who sees so many trades of our quality wingers for a dman I always come back to 'who replaces the production from Ehlers, Laine or Connor if we trade one for a dman?
Yeah defense is a need for the Wings but they need a lot of things, don't see the point in even entertaining a Mantha for Hanifin swap from a Wings point of view but I can totally see why Calgary would do it.

I get your point but the reason I initially questioned it was that people’s response is we don’t need defense. When in fact we do need defense but we need a lot of things. If someone rationalized it saying they prefer Mantha because x and I don’t like Hanifan because y & z or I really like the 2021 defense draft and free agents (some really solid ones). Then I’d be fine with it but without any context and just vague statements we’re going to keep seeing posters shot down without any context. Like I said I probably wouldn’t trade Mantha for Hanifan but I know he isn’t some chump. Thanks for responding and hopefully we do get AL!

Mantha for hannifan is funny....even if someone thiught talent for talent was accurate..wings are rebuilding wings need younger D to grow with true core of zadina..seider..whicg are 18-20 years old..when our competitive window becomes realized...

That makes no sense, a team will be made up of all sorts of different ages, and your core can easily have a 5 year separation between players ages. Besides, Hanifin is younger than Mantha by two years, so if that's your theory how the heck is an ancient guy like Mantha going to fit into your obtuse age range?

I offered a very good young Dman for a very good young power winger. There is nothing funny about that, it's a realistic and plausible scenario so save your drive by's for when somebody tries to trade 6 pieces of their crap for Mantha instead.
