    Yotes decline easily. Hjalmarsson is their best RHD and they need to improve.

    Hjalmarsson is injury prone and was actually their 3rd RD last season; Goligoski was their best RD last season. This is also shown by their time on ice last season

    Goligoski --> 23 minutes a night
    Hjalmarsson --> 18 minutes a night

    With Soderstrom performing the way he has I think he probably jumps up into a 3rd pairing role in the NHL.

    Well actually the possession matrix of Goligoski this season is way better than Hjalmarsson. Hjalmarsson had a negative impact both offensively and defensively, which is a reason why 4 other defensemen got more TOI/GP compared to him

    I'd say Arizona would love to make those deals, especially if it enables them to resign Hall. The return for Hjalmarsson looks fine considering he was their #5 defenseman. Couple of solid depth pieces while opening a spot for Soderstrom

    Leafs really don't need the very ordinary Hammer. But of course, like many CapFriendly posts, all RHDs in the league aresuch difference makers to the Leafs.
    Is Hall really necessary for the Coyotes? Yeah they paid a lot to acquire but actually were worse with him in the lineup. No need to compound the problem by resigning him. Please 21 man rosters don't work.

    Trade Stepan for future considerations. That's so common in the AHL, not so common in the NHL.

    Hjalmarsson isn't their No.5. He simply played less minutes due to coming back from injury.

    Also, don't underestimate the value of having Hjalmarsson mentor Soderstrom for a year. That could be important in helping Soderstrom settle.

    Nope, he played #5 minutes at even strength. His TOI/GP got a massive boost because he plays an average of nearly 3 minutes on the PK. And it's not only because of his injury, last season he was the #5 in even strength TOI/GP while playing in all games. And this season, Hjalmarsson was a burden on the team in both offensive and defensive perspective. OK, he was really good defensively last season so that drop-off is probably because of his injury. But at 33, would you gamble on Hjalmarsson getting somewhat back to his normal level? I mean, at his age, I doubt he'll get back to his level of 18/19 and he's not the only experienced defenseman on the Yotes roster.

    Sure he won the SC and has some valuable experience but the Yotes are trying to make the playoffs and Hjalmarsson was already a burden offensively and if his defensive game doesn't improve massively compared to this year, he's no good on the ice which is still the most important. If you get a return like this for a rental, I'd take it

    Hjalmarsson isn't even a RHD. He's a LD playing on the right side for some reason.

    Also he has sucked this year.

    Just looked at Hjalmarsson's stats, and you're right. By the looks of his CF% and FF% he really fell off hard this year. Thanks for pointing that out.

    I guess Arizona would take this trade then. AJ seems like the sort of player they would target too.

    How does the Toronto deal help in resigning Hall? With retention proposed on this, Arizona now has a 5.8 million cap hit for Johnsson (3.4 Johnsson plus 2.4 retention) instead of 5 million cap hit for Hjalmarsson.

    That trade isn't to re-sign Hall. That trade is to improve the team. They need a good 3rd line LW and they have enough defensemen to play on the right side.
