what are you talking about "he's not that great"

sure the bruins want more than his ask to trade him, but he is already a top 4 defenseman on a good contract

Hes more of a number 5 who plays with krug. He'd look brutal in Keefes system. Hes bad in transition and has zero offensive upside. Hes good defensively but I believe quite a bit of that is a result of the Bruins low event system. The bruins are also better defensively when hes off the ice then when hes on

Brodin is a fantastic defender. Carlo isnt. There isnt anything that points towards him being close to the best defensive defenseman in the nhl. Hes probably outside the top 30

You’re not trading for him to be a puck mover lol you’d put him with rielly an he’d cover rielly mistakes which is quite a bit as he focuses more on offensive minded so Carlo would probably be Toronto best defender

Lol muzzin is 10 times better then carlo. Holl is probably pretty close as well. Carlo is also bad at defending the rush and has brutal gap control. If I'm paying for a defensively defenseman teams will except someone who can defend off the rush (brodin is statistically the best in the league at doing so), being able to move the puck up the ice with control and limit chances against. Carlo limits chances against but hes not fantastic. Someone like Weegar is far better then carlo in every way

That isn't a thing, if you can't carry the puck or pass well, especially in Keefe's system you aren't worth anything. Like Ceci who can't do that and he is terrible. Having a stay at home plug who just blocks shots and passes to Rielly and make him do everything hurts Rielly. Not saying that is what Carlo is, I'm just saying this whole you need a shutdown stay at home defenceman for Rielly is so wrong. It's an old school mentality from an age that is long gone. If you have one of those, he's your #6 and asked to just kill penalties and play against lesser competition. Rielly needs a two way guy who can take the pressure off him from doing everything. Hainsey gets credit for Rielly's immense talent, he never helped defensively and was too slow to ever make a difference when he was needed to make a difference. One of Lehtonen or Dermott are going to get a shot with Rielly. Dermott is likely better defensively while Lehtonen better offensively. With Muzzin and Holl getting the harder matchups, Rielly's pair will get more favorable matchups and then having Lehtonen with Rielly will make it so hard for teams to even touch the puck let alone get many opportunities.

They like two way defenceman, if you can't handle the puck in Keefe's system teams will just force it into your hands and then you're in trouble. Carlo isn't much of a puck handler and that would hurt him in the Leafs system.

They like good defensive defensemen too. Carlo isnt that. The reason the leafs lost to boston was their inability to move the puck on the right side. Boston would target the leafs LD on the forecheck and force the leafs RD to move the puck. The leafs primary RD's were Hainsey (not a good puck mover), Zaitsev (not a good puck mover), Polak/Ozhiganov (bad puck movers) and Dermott playing with one shoulder. We all know what happens when those guys get the puck on their stick. It would result in an icing or a cycle against that would kill them.

Now they have Holl who has been very good on the 1st pair with Muzzin. Hes good at moving the puck up th ice with control. The have tons of good 3rd pair options who are strong defensively and can move the puck. They just need someone with rielly

i can assure you that carlo is better than holl... lol... by miles

carlo would slot well with muzzin. he's a strong defensive guy... and he has a variety of uses. Also carries a good cap hit. But at the same time, he is younger than many people think and his game improves drastically year over year. This guy has top pair upside easily. Right now he's a strong top 4 guy.

You're right to emphasize Keefe's system.

Carlo would be the right player in a more conservative defense system, a style that doesn't allow so many chances off the rush. In the Leafs world, his value would diminish. You need ultra fast skaters that can move the puck real quick.

I think when people say "we need Carlo", in reality they see our defensive system as shaky, and don't believe in it yet (which I can understand). But adding Carlo won't magically change things if the system stays the same.
