No, that's just how the offer sheet function works. It takes the AAV offered (in this case 11.25M), multiplies it by the term (in this case 7 years) and divides it by the term of the deal up to a maximum of 5. In other terms, the full amount of money offered to the player and divides it by the term or 5 if the term is greater than 5. This is how all offer sheet compensation is determined, but it's broken on this site and didn't give the picks it should have (four 1sts)

I'd love to have a player like Barzal in a Wild sweater and I may be one of the few in this opinion, but I think adding a 1C like him to our supporting cast at the cost of 4 1sts might be worth it. There's a couple ifs (Kaprizov being as good as we hope, our goaltending finding its way back to at least average), but I think it'd make us an immediate contender. I'd hate to sleep on the strong d-core we have since one of the older guys in Suter is still a very good player, but that might not be the case if we have to wait out drafting and developing a true 1C. Even a few years down the road, we're so tied to him and Spurgeon, I think a move like this would be at least a good attempt at putting it all together. For a newer GM like Guerin though, it could be a career deciding move, so I do understand any hesitation he may have to pull the trigger... It makes it tough as a fan, though, but i guess there is multiple perspectives to consider.

It's also worth considering that Lamoriello was a huge mentor for Guerin, so Guerin probably doesn't want to piss him off by offer sheeting his best player.

The big thing for me is the 2022 draft. There are three kids right now that look like incredible prospects (Wright, Savoie, Lambert) who are all right shot centers ironically. If Kaprizov ends up not living up to expectations, Fiala regressed, and Staal drops off a cliff, we could be looking at a long rebuild and I'd rather have that pick just in case.

That being said, Barzal might be worth it. He scored 85 points in 82 games as a 20 year old...

Ah, I understand now. Is there a reason why it is divided by 5 instead of the actual length of contract? And why would it do it anyways, when 11M is already 4 first round picks compenstion?

I don't like for Anaheim. Gotta think 11.25m is too much for Barzel. Those four first rounders,,,at least some could be lottery picks.
Ducks would. be much better spending 11.25 on UFAs and keep their picks.

I don't think Barzal would sign an offersheet with a team that isn't anywhere close to contending. More likely to stay with NYI than to join Minnesota. Money talks though...

I don't know the reason, that was just what was collectively bargained between the NHLPA and the owners but that's a good question. It might be in the CBA FAQ on this site

Billy G: "We're prepared to offer you 15M AAV"
Barzal: "Idk...think I'm going to pass"
Billy G: "We can't offer much more than that, but what did you have in mind? How much more?"
Barzal: "Less"
Billy G: ".....you want....less?"
Barzal: "Yes...much less. That's too much"
Billy G: "Um...sure, yeah. We can do less"

I'm so hesitant to let 4 1sts go but I think he's be perfect for us. Then we would have Barzal/EK/3C/Sturm for the future. Which I'm hoping ends up being Barzal/Khovanov/EK/Sturm. And I could live with getting rid of 4 1sts for that.

Yeah he's my dream scenario to fill our center need, him or Eichel. It's definitely a pipe dream though
