Description
Exerpt from an article in The Athletic today titled "What a flat salary cap is going to mean for the NHL’s free agent market":

"The most squishable class of player is the unrestricted free agent, and this offseason it’s going to be squished.

The 36 percent drop in available money is going to be disproportionately directed at the UFA class. The exact amount remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if a 50 percent discount relative to previous market rates is the standard."

https://theathletic.co.uk/1860985/2020/06/10/what-a-flat-salary-cap-is-going-to-mean-for-the-nhls-free-agent-market/

The first comment at the end of the article hits the nail right on the head:
"This seems like a great opportunity for a smart team with cap space to sign elite players at non-elite prices."...

But do this and you lose Landy the following year. You need to pay Makar and Landy in the 2021 offseason and you can only pay 1 then. IMO, pay Pietro only, save the money from Hall and use it to keep both Landy and Makar the following year.

Besides, if they get Hall, they'll have better luck getting a no. 1 overall pick than winning a cup.

laugh laugh Get real Hall and Pietrangelo aren't taking discounts to play in Colorado, Try more like 7 x $9m for Taylor Hall and 7 x $9.5m for Alex Pietrangelo at minimal.

I get what you’re saying for Pietrangelo b/c I don’t see him going $8x3. but IF Taylor hall really wants to win a cup next season could be his best chance at it. If he signs a 1 year deal with a legit contending team at a great discount he will 1. Likely put up numbers closer to his MVP season and 2. In result get that big long term contract. Idk many contending teams out there that will be able to manage hall with a big long term contract with the flat cap. Like I said it’s all about what hall really wants. If he wants to win I think this scenario is completely realistic but if he’s just chasing his bag then yeah he will likely get what you said with some mediocre, middle of the pack team and likely miss the playoffs for the next 3-4 seasons.

Hall is a rental signing in this ACGM. He would be off the books come time to sign Landy and Makar. Idk if it’s even possible with Pietrangelo on the books though.

I think you missed the fact that Hall only gets signed to a 1 year deal here. His $7m comes off the books in 2021 and all of it can go to Makar. Calvert will get replaced by Bowers (ELC), saving enough to give Landeskog a raise. And then one of Donskoi or Compher will likely get selected by Seattle and be replaced by Newhook (ELC) which saves enough for other contracts.

If you read the description the premise of this AGM is that many UFA's may be forced to take up to 50% paycuts this offseason due to the flat cap. Whilst I don't think the top UFA's will be as heavily effected, it's possible that GM's/owners are keen to hand out huge contracts this offseason. And some players might prefer to take short-term deals to wait until the cap rises again before cashing in.

A short term deal might be particularly attractive for Hall, as he could boost his value a lot ahead of a long-term contract by having another 90 point season on a contender while having a good playoff season for the first time.

Stranger things have also happened, such as Kariya and Selanne signing in Colorado for a combined $7m to win a cup.

Offers of $10m+ x 7 years from attractive teams might not be forthcoming this offseason due to owners being reluctant to invest so much financially in this economic climate. So Pietrangelo might be willing to take a short-term deal with a contender where he can maximise his chance at the cup while waiting for the cap to rise again before cashing in.

In theory he should take the longest term possible, but the flat cap might create situations and opportunities that usually aren't there in UFA, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

I agree. Could easily seeing one or both of these guys signing with a team for 1-3 years on a cheaper deal with a shot to win the cup and then cash in when cap rises again with new US TV deal and revenues flowing again in a few years

Yep, ngikas pointed my mistake out to me already. That's what I get for skimming over the finer details of this proposal! You're 100% right, and it's a good plan for the Avs
