They have two completely opposite approaches. Murray was shooting from the hip and spending like a madman to make the team good now at all costs. How'd that work out? He did things to do things.
Biggest upside: Not afraid to take a swing.
Biggest downside: Terrible player identification and value assessment.
Botterill is largely ignoring the now in favor of supposedly building a winning culture throughout the organization. How's that working out?
Biggest upside: Uh...hiring Krueger.
Biggest downside: Completely lacks decisiveness.
Honestly, I'd rather have Murray, a guy who takes a swing versus a guy who does nothing even when the boat is clearly sinking. But neither were good hires. I hated the Botterill hire more initially so I might be biased.
