Pearson and Eriksson trade no CBO

Description
Steep price to pay to get rid of Eriksson but think it works for both teams.
Canucks free up lots of space to resign Pettersson and Hughes.
Not sure if Philly would go for that deal but was told that my last offer for Hagg was too much.

Ottawa wants low salary and lots of young players and picks. This trade doesn’t fit with this team plan.

Philly gets the best two players in the trade and a second for scraps, Why would Vancouver do that?

Ott has no room for Virtanen and OJ isn't nearly enough to take on 3x6 of LE and give up a 1st in the process for some reason.

Virtanen and Joulevi are young players, Eriksson is low salary. I get that they want picks but unlikely the 1st turns into a player of Virtanen 's quality.

Other than Tkachuk, who is a better forward than Virtanen? Brown perhaps but I would guess Virtanen performs better with similar icetime.
They need young cost controlled forwards and becomes their 2nd best forward.

Eriksson is 2x6 in cap but 2x4 in salary. 2x2.5 if after july 1st.

Ottawa has 4, count 'em 4, forwards signed for next year and 6 free agents on the current roster likely to be re-signed. That leaves 4 slots "open" and it's unlikely all 4 will be filled from within despite Ottawa's excellent prospect pool. Eriksson is on the books for only 2 more years, not 3. However, as you and @Claesson4Norris accurately state, Ottawa shouldn't be paying for this transaction. See my comment in response to the poster about the math.

Let's put aside the question of return for the moment. The math actually favors this deal for Ottawa. The Sens have only 8 skaters and both goalies signed for next year with an aggregate hit of $37 million. The only RFA's that Ottawa is likely to re-sign (Brown, DuClair, Tierney) probably won't cost more than $11 million together. So you're roughly $12 million short of the cap floor and all of the guys you have likely to fill those slots are less than a million each (other than Virtanen from this trade). Eriksson actually makes sense even with Gaborik already on the sidelines. However, there is no possibility that Ottawa would have to pay for the "benefit" of Eriksson's addition to the payroll.

Eriksson is 2 x $6 million in cap but $1 million and then $4 million after the "official" end of this season.

The Eriksson cap hit might actually be helpful to the Senators in reaching the cap floor, especially if they don't re-sign Chris Tierney or Andrew DuClair. With a lot of guys who will still be waivers-exempt, carrying Eriksson won't take up an actual roster slot next season. But by themselves, Virtanen and Juolevi probably aren't worth more than about a second-round pick each (and that's being generous), and the benefit to Vancouver of taking Eriksson off their hands is worth quite a bit more than that. In short, I think that you'd have to give Ottawa that 2021 second that you'll still have after deciding against the Philadelphia trade, and the most you'll get from Ottawa is a sixth or seventh.

Appreciate the response but I disagree with your assessment of Virtanen 's value. Joulevi is worth a 2nd at this juncture. We are also talking about an 18 to 25 pick most likely although I guess the play in does muddy the waters there a bit.

I'm surprised regarding the Ott pushback, thought it would come from Nucks fans.

Realistically, Sens have most of their forwards are locked in. It's basically 4RW, 3LW, and a middle six C spot. Plus extra skaters.

Yeah, but they would make room for Virtanen in preference to one of the guys who can move up and down from the AHL.

Sure, but you don't trade a 1st and take on a brutal contract to fill out the bottom half of your lineup. I like Virtanen but not at anything close to this price.

ok be real VAN doesn't need to send a first as well as that.

Just the sens shouldn't be giving up that high of a pick as the return. A 3rd is about approrpriate.

That flyers trade has to be a joke though, right? Hagg is a #6 at best... and Raffl is essentially a discount roussel or an expensive motte. we don't need him. Trash that trade

Oh, agreed. I was just taking exception to the narrow idea that Ottawa doesn't have room for Virtanen. To me, that's a specious objection.

As I said in another comment above, the only way I see Ottawa taking Eriksson is in exchange for a sixth or seventh and getting Virtanen, Juolevi and Vancouver's 2021 second. And even then, I don't think that the Sens necessarily jump at the chance.

I like Hagg but perhaps I'm overrating him. I see him as a top 4 guy and potentially more.
