Well they got Kawhi back, who although struggling with injury was a far better player then DeRozan. The Raps sacrificed their future knowing that Kawhi was unlikely to resign. The Leafs are doing the opposite here. The best analogy I got is trading Nylander for Ovi this offseason knowing Ovi will go back to the Caps after 1 year. (In general superstars in basketball are far more important then in hockey. Imagine if the leafs only had to play 7 players every game, they'd be SO good, right?)
Except with this trade not only do we get older and lose long term viability but we get worse. Kane isn't even in the same realm as Marner, and do you really think a 2nd and 3rd changes much? That's like offering Nylander and Kerfoot to Vegas for Stone, if Stone was 8 years younger. Kane also gets 100+ PIM a year and given the Leafs shaky PK it really doesn't make sense to trade for him of all people.
It's estimated that Kane's penalties meant an extra 10~ goals scored against the Sharks on a yearly basis, so instead of Kane being a 30 goal scorer he's effectively a 20 goal scorer and 50 pt scorer. That sounds a lot like Mikheyev or Kapanen to me...
Kane is our agitator and aggressor and he is our defender.
He will also keep players honest and not let anyone cheap shot Tavares Nylander or Matthews combine that with 30 goals is valuable...
but even with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. And him for Marner isn’t fair especially when you throw in a pretty damn good goalie.
I think this trade is bad for both teams but favors the sharks
