Trading Freddy for a First and Kapanen for Manson

Description
Today's effort at creative thinking, spurred by several comments I've seen recently that Toronto might not want to re-sign Freddie Andersen to a new contract.

The pre-conditions of the Manson trade are that Anaheim has signed free agent RD Dylan DeMelo and traded for RD MacKenzie Weeger, so don't bother commenting that "Anaheim won't trade their only young RD."

Elements of the Manson/Kapanen trade were suggested by SammyT_51 as an improvement on a similar idea. Isac Lundestrom immediately becomes Toronto's best center prospect.

Minnesota trades down from the 24th overall pick to the 50th overall pick in return for one year of Freddie Andersen, a good young defenseman for the foreseeable future, and moving up one round in the 2021 draft. Toronto moves into the first round and gets an inexpensive right-handed middle 6 forward to replace some of Kapanen's production.

My thought is that Anton Khudobin behind an improved defense would be almost as good as Andersen, and a lot cheaper.

Note the effect on the draft chart. Toronto currently has one first (2021) and two seconds (one of which might become a third) in the next two drafts. After these moves, Toronto has two firsts and two thirds.

How is Minnesota taking on Andersen when they still need to manage Dubnyk, get Kahkonen some icetime, and keep Stalock on the books?

I mean sure, Stalock could just get traded/waived, but regardless of the choice he's not going to be a part of the Wild organization. Too likely he gets claimed off of waivers. With Dubnyk, you're looking at nearly $3M in dead cap a la buyout or a trade during a time where cap space is more of a commodity than ever. It'd be expensive for the Wild to move him, or there's going to be cap coming back the other way. More curious than anything. Thoughts?

Khudobin is primarily a product of Dallas' defensive system and wouldnt be repeated if he came to Toronto.

No, as the Anaheim GM I'm quite happy with that exchange and Toronto wouldn't include Liljegren in that package because they need three decent RD next season; their alternatives aren't nearly as appealing.

The resulting Wild team I've constructed in parallel with this post has a little over $6 million in cap space with the two goalies but only 21 roster slots filled. My initial (i.e., half-baked as yet) idea is that they might carry Stalock for the first half of the season to see whether Dubnyk rights himself. Note that Dubnyk's contract is up next year, too.

Manson = Kapanen ?

My feeling is that with De Melo and Weegar signed long term, plus Gudbranson and Hakanpaa, Manson is surplus to our needs (and signed for only two more seasons). Meanwhile, our current RWs are Jacob Silfverberg, Troy Terry and Carter Rowney, plus some leftie youngster(s) playing on their off side. I think that Kapanen slots in there nicely, plus the Maple Leafs fans keep saying he's a #2 RW, so I'll take the chance that he's good enough for us.

This solution doesn't exactly solve the Kahkonen conundrum. He's done his two years in the AHL and his deal's up. Given the window for goalies, he's only got about 6-8 quality seasons left in him to maximize his earnings: is he taking a deal with term to play in the NHL or is he going to end up going back to Finland for a payday?

We both know that Dubnyk and Stalock aren't the long-term options here. Regardless if Andersen signs elsewhere or becomes another anchor for the Wild, all signs point to Minnesota hedging their bets on the young Finnish goaltender. If the space is there, a buyout for Dubnyk makes sense. If Kahkonen can be signed to a three year deal similar to Saros, then I think half a season in the NHL for both Stalock and Kahkonen could work. I'd personally defer to an Andersen-Kahkonen tandem though: I think Stalock doesn't offer anything to Minnesota except a roster spot to get in Kahkonen's way.

Thanks for the input and the education. I was not sufficiently knowledgeable about the interplay with Kahkonen. All I've done is re-sign him to a minimum contract.

I still don't get it. You mean Manson from Anaheim to Minnesota for the first? Or Toronto should flip him to the Wild instead of sending Andersen? Or Manson to Toronto for their 2021 first? I'm not grasping your idea.

Seems like quite the contract for 34 year Khudobin, especially when 2 out of his 3 best seasons have coincidentally come these past seasons with a highly defensive Dallas team.

Huh...? If we get Demelo (say trade for his UFA rights) and Weegar, everything previously basically goes out the window, and I'd just simply rather have a 2020 1st than Kap

That's certainly a valid consideration. However, note that he's only three and a half years older than Freddie.

Okay, now I get it. The problem is, with Dumba and Spurgeon on the right side, I don't think that the Wild are interested in Manson, especially if it means giving us their second first.

Yes, and we're concerned about giving Freddie too much money/term. That just intensifies with Khudobin, given that he's older and we don't know how he'd perform under a much different style than Dallas's.

Also, I think he's saying after the Leafs acquire Pitts 1st, they then trade it to the Ducks for Manson.

Edit: Never mind, he got it.

As noted above, as the Anaheim GM, I'm quite happy with this exchange. Kapanen fits both a short-term and long-term need for us. To me, it seems clear that Kapanen-Silfverberg-Terry-Rowney is superior to Silfverberg-Heinen-Terry-Rowney and DeMelo-Weegar-Manson-Gudbranson isn't a significant improvement on DeMelo-Weegar-Gudbranson-Hakanpaa.
