Description
Saw the Dallas deal on a Dallas post and wanted to see the other side. I think it is a really good deal for the pens, fills a couple of big needs for next year.

I just don’t know why everyone is selling Murray for so low. I’d rather keep both him and Jarry and wait till expansion draft.

The Dallas trade was bad when the Dallas fan did it an hour ago, and it's still bad now.

    Dallas isn't doing that.
And selling out on Murray for 2 2nds is a poor choice.
I agree with @mhockey91 wait till the expansion draft. There is sooooo much more value there.

    Pittsburgh.

Faksa, Honka for DeSmith, Lafferty, 2nd

    Zero interest in Honka, none.

Faska would be a fine 3C, but his numbers are just a HINT better than Blueger's. Blueger is $750K, Faska $2.5M. Similar time, similar offense, similar defense, faceoffs are tilted a little to Faska, but both are below 50%.

So you are giving DeSmith, Lafferty, 2nd for the right to pay someone $1.75M extra to do a smidgen more Blueger will do.

    Pass at that cost.

I'm missing something then, how is there more value when the expansion draft comes? The penguins would have to protect one goalie leaving the other exposed so whichever is exposed would have very low value if the pens need to move him or risk losing him for nothing.

I like that Dallas trade, but it only makes sense for Dallas if they’re trying to clear some cap (Pietrangelo, etc). I’d pass on Laff for a fourth or fifth round pick in that scenario tho

someone will take Bjugstad for that though doesn't matter who. Is still young, big and can play multiple positions.

because the penguins can move so he has value and Seattle knows that.
This is how you make deals. Don't think they wait till the draft to figure this stuff out.
Ron F and Mario are old friends.
A wink here a wink there, and you see something like this. Seattle takes Hornqvist and the penguins trade Murray to Seattle.
Murray is also at a lower value right now. He can bounce back. If he does his value is much higher. On top of it, you let Murray and Jarry battle it out and keep the better goalie.

Why would Seattle take on the Hornqvist contract when they could just take the exposed goalie for free in the expansion draft? Just because they are old friends doesn't mean he will hurt his own team to help out Mario.

He is making 4.1 on a flat cap and offers 4th line production. Gonna be difficult to move that player without a sweetener no matter how "big" he is

He had 50 points 2 years ago and was on pace for close to 40 last year if he'd played a full season. He was hurt all this year is the reason his production was so low

Was .40625 points per game last year. That's a 33 point pace and as you mentioned is oft injured. So you are looking at a player if he stays healthy the whole year you can hope for mid 30s point production but more likely will get you 60 games roughly and around 20-25 points for 4.1 Million. I think other GM's say I can sign a UFA for 2-3 million a year for that production.

Because pens can flip a goalie pre expansion draft or use someone like Jarry (I still think Murray is the guy they’ll keep) to have Seattle select hornqvist as well. I think hornqvist in Seattle is very realistic. He’s still a good effective player despite being a little overpaid and the last few years of his contract he’ll be LTIR

Jugs is a positive possession player and solid defensively. A team will take him for free with a year left. He doesn’t have “negative” value

That's my whole point though if you're just flipping him pre-expansion draft his value will be very low. And Seattle will need some incentive to take on Hornqvist and his contract and a goalie they could just take instead of him for free isn't incentive.

They will trade Jarry before the expansion draft in that scenario. There will still be value for him if he performs again.

If they trade Jarry it should be at the end of this season, his value likely won't be higher than it is now with the way he played this year.

If he were paid differently he would have positive value. The cap hit is the price teams are paying. For 4.1 million I can sign two 4th line players with positive possession stats that can get me 20-25 points each. If Pittsburgh wants to retain some salary then that is a different story. The whole reason he is being offered in a trade here is because his production does not equal his contract. If it did then Pittsburgh would keep him or ask for something in return that can help their team.

There are teams desperate for centre depth though like minny and buffalo. He could regain form in a new environment. He was very solid for Florida. Injuries plagued his Pittsburgh tenure

exactly this. Your assumption is that his value is low pre draft because "Seattle will take him"
    But this is false.
1st off, the deal will be done far before there is ever a draft. No team is going to put themselves in that position.
2nd, if they don't have a deal they move him ahead of time.

You can bet before puck even drops next season, that Seattle already has a few deals done.
Teams aren't waiting to make these deals at the draft.
They are done months in advance, possibly over a year.
