I know its for fun but Buffalo trades Eichel for spare parts when he is hands down the best player in this mess.

I'm not at all saying the Sabres would do that, but that's far from 'spare parts'.

You're right I'd like to have a couple of those players in Detroit but when you are trading for one of the 10 best players in the league shouldn't the bar be raised a little bit?

Well I suppose it depends on the direction that you want to go after trading a guy like that. If you're still looking to improve (which is very difficult when trading a guy like Eichel), then yes, this isn't what you should be looking for. But if you're headed toward a rebuild, I think this is quite the package. Two 1sts in this deep draft (including #5), a first round prospect with a couple years of development, Kapanen - who is young and still has years of team control ahead (you can flip or keep him), and Ekholm, a fantastic Dman who still has two years left and is on an excellent contract, you could get a good return for him. Plus two goalie prospects - they don't add much value, but they certainly don't hurt either.

All teams decline. Players in these deal have NMC or NTC so they still get to decide. Tkachuk will be the next captain of the Flames so I don't see that trade happening.

Taking a second look at it and I was undervaluing Ekholm he is 30 but still pretty much on top of his game. I do agree and I was wrong before this is far from spare parts no matter what context it is viewed.
