Trading Rielly

Description
Credit to @Jack for the idea.
It would suck to lose Rielly, but the Leafs left side is pretty deep with Muzzin, Sandin, Dermott, and Lehtonen.
A few areas where Rielly could go would be NJ, who only have Butcher on their Left Side. The Jets, who have Morrissey, but wouldn't complain about adding a second strong LHD to their roster (they might complain about the Cap) and LA who doesn't have a strong defenseman in their lineup other than Doughty.

Rielly could be used as a stopgap for any of these three teams to have their prospects develop into Top 4 Defenseman (Smith/Bahl - NJ, Clague/Bjornfot - LA, Heinola/Stanley - WPG)

I know a lot of folks dislike Demers as he ages, but for 1 year, he can play the mentor role for Sandin and give a presence in the room. He is also more of a defensive defenceman now, so Sandin should have more freedom to move around the ice to make plays.

Getting back one of Lowry/Iafallo/Zacha would also give the Leafs more freedoms to move Kerfoot/Johnsson for pieces of necessity and to restock the prospect pool.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated, just please keep it civil :)

After reading the description and especially the last sentence, MTL wouldn’t trade a 3rd rd pick for Kerfoot. We dont have a roster spot for him, and Norlinder/Harris are not going anywhere. Romanov/Norlinder/Harris/Struble all have top4 potentiel ( Romanov Norlinder more ), so we’ll keep them all

I'm sure we could get more for Rielly, but given his injury history/short term left, he might not get a kings ransom.
The Habs could always use a center. They have Danault. KK isn't ready, Poehling isn't ready, Domi prefers the wing. It would give the Habs depth at a position that they lack immediate help at.

Fair enough. Would you add stronger prospects to the trades? More picks? Or would you simply not trade him at all?

Moving Rielly allows for the Leafs to sign Hyman next year, while also developing Dermott and Sandin. I'm sure they would be fine minus Rielly. He is often injured, and somehow the Leafs still perservered through that adversity.

Often injured? Dude.... he has lost 21 man games to injury over 6 SEASONS until this one. So one major injury in 7 seasons and you dub him a band-aid?🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ 21 lost man games AFTER a major knee injury in junior.... so apparently he heals well too! Most absurd statement about Reilly I have seen. Maybe you have him confused with Ryan Murray🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Suzuki? Ya know, that kid that was playing first line minutes for the last 20 something games? Habs are fine at centre. Another year of Domi playing there isn't hurting them at all.

Rielly isn't often injured, hes basically never injured lol and the Leafs sucked when he was out. He's the heart and soul of the team along with Hyman. He was still on pace for nearly 50 points this year too and you're on here trading him for peanuts. He had TWENTY (20!) goals last year as a defenseman and has averaged 23+ minutes per game the last two seasons, just turned 26, is amazing on the PP, plays the PK and still has 2 more seasons on one of the best defenseman contracts in the league.

But yeah lets trade him cause you're sure they'll be fine without him

It’s not a crazy idea and makes sense. If blues resign Petro they’ll have a logjam of RHD: Petro, Parayko, Faulk. They really only have Dunn on the left side and i guess scandella but he’s better on the bottom pair.
              Rielly-Petro
              Dunn-Faulk
Would give you guys a really balanced top 4. Playing Rielly with someone as good as Petro would really give him rope offensively. It would be a fun pairing to watch

It's pure fantasy lunacy, because we are not trading Parayko. Zero chance. Screw top 4, we have a really balanced top 8-9. Scandella is and has been a fantastic partner for Parayko, allowing him to open up his own offensive game. We also have Gunnarsson, Mikkola and Perunovich on the left side. You guys need to let this "ooh we can get Parayko" stuff go already.

You CAN’T be serious. Danault is our 1st center, Suzuki is our 2C and Domi Doesn’t want to play winger and he is way better at center than the wing. Kotkaniemi is almost ready and Poehling is alright, but we don’t want to waste him on a 4th line. We have Tatar Drouin Lehkonen Byron LW, Kerfoot would be in the press box. Montreal doesn’t have a true #1 center but we are one of the most stacked team at Center for #2-3 centers

As a Leaf fan, I wouldn't mind trading Reilly. Moneywise I don't think can compete with other teams who will offer Reilly way too much $$$ in the summer of 2022. IMO Reilly's offensive stats on the PP makes his playing value seem more than he deserves. His defensive play....average. His trade value is more than what you indicate though. If Reilly was traded the Leafs would "hoping" that their large numbers of LHD can find a way to be NHL competent too good. Muzzin, Dermot, Sandin Lehoten, Marincin.
You've overestimated Johnsson's trade value in a cap strapped league.
Leafs need Kerfoot at centre, if Johnson can traded for a futures (and not many) take that cap and try to sign a RHD like DeMelo

Trading rielly is absolutely the smart move but it has to be for the right return. If they arent getting a top pair right defenseman like Parayko, Hamilton, Severson, Ekblad, Spurgeon or even a really good LD that can play the RS like Brodin or Theodore then they shouldn't move him.

Like I said before it's very situational. If they arent able to get a partner like Gudas, Severson or Murphy type guy for him then move him but if they can then I would be happy to keep him. It would just hurt their long term success quite a bit.

              Edit: thanks for the credit

If you are talking about pure numbers and ignoring team chemistry and leadership id be open to trading Rielly to better balance our defense. I don't think any of these proposals accomplish that though. id rather trade him for equal or almost equal value RHD or at least include a good RHD prospect in the trade.

Actually Domi prefers to play C according to pretty much all his interviews, not sure where you got that he prefers wing from.

Suzuki was easily outscoring Kerfoot in his rookie season, and KK wasn't ready this season because he put on too much weight which hindered his skating and was hit by the injury bug. That doesn't mean he won't be good to go next season though.

All in all Danault, Suzuki and Domi are all better than Kerfoot and KK will very likely be better than him next season as well. Although they do need a game breaker at that position Kerfoot isn't that, nor is he better than MTL's current centermen.

I am not opposed to trading Rielly for the Top Pairing RHD that this team needs.

None of these trade make the mark though.

              No thanks under these conditions.

Here, you have moved Rielly and not improved the D core significantly. This would be a colossal failure IMO.

We don't need or want Kerfoot. He's an overpaid 3rd liner.

I completely forgot about Suzuki last night. That's my bad. Although Domi > Kerfoot, I'm still not sold with him being a 3C (Domi). He should be playing Top 6 minutes, but I guess Montreal has the depth now.

Sometimes I shouldn't post past 2am. I forget Suzuki is a hockey player, and underestimate Montreal's C depth.
