Description
Keep in mind that I'm approaching this more the way Holland might as opposed to what I exactly want. The things I was looking for - as per observations regarding Holland from Willis, DNB, and Lowetide - were:

-Veteran goaltender, likely a name familiar to Holland or the organization
-Prioritization of QMJHL and USHL players at the draft
-At least 6 picks in the draft
-Fair value for Puljujarvi

I think it's coincidental that the Oilers end up adding more former Red Wings. Assumes no CBO (I'd go Namestnikov > Fast if there is). Pronman's Top-122, EP's consolidated rankings, and central scouting lists used as well, and are the primary source of picks in the later rounds.

Bonus overages assume that Edmonton beats Chicago in the play-in round and beats their first round opponent.

Draft:
#20. (RC) Mavrik Bourque (Shawinigan, QMJHL)
#52 (via NYI). (LW) Daniil Gushchin (Muskegon, USHL)
#82. (LW) Daniel Torgersson (Frolunda, SHL)
#144. (G) Calle Clang (Rogle, SuperElit)
#175. (RD) Jake Boltmann (Edina High, USHS)
#206. (LD) David Ma (Shattuck St. Mary's, USHS)

Koskinen likely to see majority of the starts having taken a step forward in 19/20. Howard to play maybe 25-30 games? I'd think Skinner sees anywhere between 1-5 games as well for the organization to make a decision on keeping him long-term.

I'd be tempted to keep all of the prospects in the AHL for the entire season: there would be enough firepower down in Bakersfield to justify a Calder run, and I think that kind of experience would be more important than regular season games on a team that maybe(?) finishes top three in a weak division. I think Kemp and Rasanen have earned contracts for next season before their rights expire.

My guess is Edmonton does their best to expose Kassian for Seattle during expansion and likely trades out of the first round during the 2021 draft. Does a full year of AA, Ennis, and Yamamoto - plus the additions of Fast and Helm - help this team improve at 5v5 enough to contend for top in the Pacific?

On arguably one of the worst teams iced in NHL history. I highly recommend the Willis article (May 20th) regarding what Holland is apt to do with the backup position. It boils down to essentially Howard and Smith, and I like the rational behind Howard enough to consider it:

Quoting: Jonathan Willis
Prior to this season, Howard had a .920-plus save percentage at 5-on-5 for eight consecutive seasons. As recently as 2018-19 he came in five goals better than Natural Stat Trick’s tough expected goals metric.

It's a stronger body of work than what Smith had prior to coming to Edmonton, and imo the biggest factor between gambling on either Howard or Smith is age. Smith hit his age curve really hard during his November skid and recovered enough to be respectable, but is it reasonable to expect him not to regress further due to age? On strictly a one-year deal (I strongly believe Edmonton needs to push hard for a genuine #1 next season and replace Koskinen when he expires with the winner of Konovalov vs Rodrigue) I think the bet is fine.

Other names mentioned that might be had for cheap were Anderson, Brossoit, Elliot, Miller, and Talbot. I don't think Brossoit and Talbot iare genuine options due to their histories in Edmonton: I don't think they want to come back and I don't think the management beyond Holland wants them back either. I think Anderson and Miller are done, and I'm extremely concerned about Elliot's injury history.

why would the Senators trade a Russian Prospect in the AHL and a second for a guy who won't return to the NHL

Because you're misinformed. Puljujarvi - producing at NHL third-line rates as the best player on his team - is already on record saying he wants to play in the NHL, just not in Edmonton. It's 100% due to how the management here mistreated him. He and his agent are both on record saying they don't care about the money, they just don't want to be in Edmonton anymore.

There have been a ton of effective USHL graduates out of the last half-dozen drafts. It's a league that's starting to become equivalent to the CHL. Due to the higher level of competition at the NCAA level and stipulations between Canadian major junior and the AHL, it's a faster way to get American prospects into the minors as well.

Ma is 17 and produces really well. I'd have liked to see him play with Lincoln this year, but given his age and size, I see why he was limited to 1 game. Boltmann is effectively Kesselring 2.0, and is likely to at least see AHL games. Both kids are offensive, skating defenders with nothing but time available to develop through the NCAA. I think the reason they rank so low is because they play on high school teams as opposed to USHL teams and that they are committed to college for an uncertain amount of years.

They're project picks, no different than drafting a 17 year old out of the secondary European leagues.
