Now that Brodin isn't a multi year target, his value would look similar to what Faulk got. Probably Suzuki and a 3rd, representing a better prospect than Bokk and a higher pick. I don't think a contract extension will affect the price unless the pick is made conditional.

Trading Gardiner would make sense for the Hurricanes here, they might even just throw him in for Donato.

But that leaves Staal for Trocheck... which to me just isn't a viable swap, even despite Trocheck's weak season

Counter:

Suzuki
Conditional 3rd, becomes a playoff protected first if Brodin resigns

I would love Brodin as a luxury buy. With a fair extension, I'd probably offer Skjei/Suzuki/pick in exchange. I'd rather keep Gardiner, though the post-season will be the real test for both Gards and Skjei in terms of whether one or both are worth keeping.

Faulk got Eddy/Bokk because of the extension. Without an extension, Brodin's probably worth the Skinner return.

I think Trocheck and Suzuki would be the starter for Brodin with the Wild obviously adding. We need a top 6 center now and for the future. Or just Necas straight up, but I don't see any way Carolina moves Necas.

I figured Carolina wouldn't want to give up on Skjei so quickly, so that's why I had Gardiner instead. But you could sub him out for Skjei and maybe the canes add a hair (due to contract and I think Gardiner is better).

I do think Skjei is the Hurricanes way of saying they are out on Brodin. If the cost involves both their best center prospect and a top 6 forward, I don't blame them for being out.

That return would have been fair last year, but a one year rental of Brodin won't get that package any more. Most likely a prospect with top 6 forward potential, a conditional pick and a middle six forward or replacement defenseman

Skjei's NTC doesn't kick in until the start of next season. They acquired Skjei, IMO, specifically because he would be a moveable piece for similar value in the offseason after the playoffs were done. Their big need for Skjei was specifically due to injuries to Dougie and Pesce. They simply weren't willing to deal a 1st unless it was for a guy that was signed long-term.

I agree but he's not a rental here, he's extended. Also I think long-term Necas is their best center prospect, there won't be room for Suzuki with Aho and Necas which makes Suzuki expendable.

There seems to be conflicting ideas here tears of joy

My take is that Skjei was a desperation move by Carolina who was afraid of being without an offensive powerhouse like Hamilton for the playoffs. They overpaid for him IMO, but I do think they'd want to at least see how he performs when the season resumes and re-evaluate from there.
