Jost for Risto straight up might be enough.

Risto is hands down the most polarizing player on this site value wise Jost and a 2 would get it done in my mind. Maybe add another for retention

No its because hes excruciatingly bad. I love it when the leafs play him because of his impact. He puts up empty calorie points because he primarily plays the net front role on the PP (something that will never happen on any other team in the NHL. Hes not that good there but buffalo has no one else) and once he doesnt put up points he has nothing. Even with the points hes still a net negative by a lot.

Hes a horrendous puck mover, hes terrible defensively and hes pretty much useless offensively. To get any sort of value from him he would need to play on an extremely sheltered 3rd pair that doesn't go near the defensive zone and he only plays with good linemates. If a team were to do that he would have a little bit of value but a role like that doesnt exist and there are tons of defenseman who can do that for around 1-2 million and they would still be way way way better.

At 4.4 million he isnt worth that if a team gave up future considerations for him much less giving up any sort of meaningful assets for him

So a 40 pt defenseman is only a late 2nd better than a 25 pt center?
Let me repeat. Ristolainen is only 25 years old. Please check out how old Chara and Burns were before they got their 3rd 40 pt season.
Ristolainen has played 24 min/gm for at least 4 different NHL coaches.
This trade is a late 1st (currently 27th OA), a 25 pt center and a “C” prospect and Buffalo retains!
I know he has a terrible +/- but he also plays against the other teams top lines, one of the top hitters in the NHL and plays in all situations.
Anything less than this I would definitely keep Ristolainen

I agree that we don't need Ristolainen. I was playing around with the scenario though. With 2 years left Ristolainen probably doesn't make sense as he'd just be blocking Timmins. That said, a top 4 RHD with 1 year left to UFA would be worth considering if we can acquire one relatively cheaply (eg. Savard/Larsson).
