FLA announced before COVID that they were cutting 10m from payroll. Why would they make a trade that increases there payroll? TML now weaker on bottom 6 forwards and marginally better on D. Weegar is OK Dman but only marginally better if at all better then what we have now.

Weegar is actually a really underrated defensive guy. Adding him to the top-4 with Rielly, Muzzin and Holl would give them 4 solid defencemen, and I know we said that with Barrie but Weegar is what the Leafs actually need. Solid, not much flashiness, has some grit but can still move the puck, and gets the job done.

I agree. I would trade him straight up for Johnsson but we need to keep Kerfoot.
Things to know about Weegar:
1. Was a healthy scratch at least 7 times in 2019/20
2. Played over 70% of his shifts this year with Ekblad
3. Played about 50% of his shifts this year with Barkov and Huberdeau
4. Has a concussion history
5. FLA will want more then just Johnsson

Heres a good video:

I think we should stick with what we have and get a rental sometime after christmas. A rental would be a more impactful player for the playoffs.

Yes... His look good. Just have to ask yourself why they look good now? Why only one year? How are the advanced stats you are looking at calculated? Etc. Advance stats have weaknesses too. You have to look at other factors.

Yes but they are TM REL advanced stats, and they were good last year as well.

The issue with those stats is that they skew when you have a lot of ice time with the same player(s). Im not saying that he is a bad player, far from it. Just if he were to play in Toronto his numbers would most likely regress to what his previous numbers were like and in that case is he really that much better then say Dermott? The better way to go is an impact rental sometime between christmas and the trade deadline. You are much more likely to get retained salary at this time and can go for a much bigger name. For example Petry (not saying thats who we should target just an example) is on the last year of his deal and we could package Johnsson (Whos value hopefully goes back up after a down year) and one of Dermott, Lily, or Sandin plus picks. Montreal would then retain enough so he can fit under the cap. The rental would walk at the end of the season but thats ok because we now have enough money to resign Hyman and Anderson (Or his replacement). If we get a player like Weegar and sign him we just have to move assets again next summer. We need to get a player on retained salary in order to get that impact player for a playoff run and the best way to do that is at the trade deadline. I would much prefer to acquire a player like Honka before the season starts and see if he fits.

Only problem you said is that Demott=Sandin. In fact, Sandin is worth multiple 1sts. He won't be traded.

Didnt really mean to suggest that Sandin is equal to Dermott just he is on option if we are acquiring a rental. He would probably have to be Bobby Orr to give up Sandin for a rental! Dermott or Lilly are probably more realistic for a rental player

I've always been very skeptical of rentals especially in a position of need. They struggle to settle in to the team. I think rentals should be only for the bottom pair on D or bottom 6 on offense (or maybe a backup goalie). If they're looking for a top-4 guy it should come in the offseason.
