What if the Sharks landed John Tavares and not Karlsson

Description
Just a theoretical example of what the team could have looked like this last year if Tavares signed with us and the Karlsson trade never happened.

I decided to keep all of the other trades in tact as to keep things as straightforward and feasible (you never know if they would have kept Hoffman or not). Unfortunately I also decided to keep all of the free agents we lost the same, so Pavs, Donskoi, and others are all also gone. I also decided that Jumbo would have to go (makes me very sad) just for cap reasons and because I don't think we would have signed him with this kind of roster.

Keep in mind that this is in no way meant to be super accurate or perfect in any way. It's just a way of me reflecting on what the team might have been without Karl and with Tavares.

the fact he took less money and more term to come play for the leafs is just pefect. Sure we got 4 guys making 40mill but for a guy to take less money and more term to come here and become captain a year later im good.

I know some fans criticize the 40.5m spend by the Leafs on four players....yep there is some criticism is deserved. But the Leafs could trade Marner, Nylander and Matthews for good assets.
Sharks have 35.5 tied up in four aging players, Burns, Couture, Vlasic, and Karlsson all of those players have NMCs or very restrictive NTCs. No one ever criticizes the Sharks and their long term cap fiasco looming. PS, add 7m NTC Kane and 5.825m Jones with term......yikes.

I don't disagree but I don't think that "no one ever criticizes the Sharks". I've see quite a few people rip into Wilson for those contracts, myself included.

I have seen some good Marner trades (the one to NJ for a 1st+2nd, Severson, Bratt or Wood, etc) and honestly it could be what's for the best. Leafs get cap space, picks, and some really good depth pieces.
Nylanders contract rn is a steal as he is settling in to the player we all know he could be. Sure he could be moved but honestly he wont get as much value as marner
Matthews is getting better and better and as he grows he should improve so no to moving him. Even though a team like Arizona would pay half their roster for him no to that for now.
