I really don’t see why the Jets would do this. Hamilton is good yes, but to give up a 1st line winger who is locked up for 5 years in Ehlers, a 50 point pace defensemen in Pionk, and our best prospect in Heinola for him? Also a 1st. Bean adds some good value, but Dzingel and Fleury aren’t more than a 3rd liner and 3rd pairing defensemen respectively.
And to give Hamilton the 3rd largest contract for a defenseman? Karlsson had 2 Norris’s and 6 60+ point seasons when he signed, Doughty had a Norris, 2 Cups, and was one of the best defensemen in the league for about a decade. Hamilton doesn’t even come close to that, he’s had a good run of 40-50 point seasons, but nothing really more than that till this season. He shouldn’t even be paid more than Josi, who has been a better defensemen for longer.
Hamilton was a PPG, and the deserving candidate for the Norris (Carlson would have won it because pOiNtS, but most fans with any understanding of analytics, or that watch Hamilton and Carlson agree Hamilton was just better) and you're giving up a 2nd line winger in Ehlers, a D man coming off a career year who's historically not great, a meh prospect in Heinola and a 1st for him? Carolina laugh at that buddy. Hamilton is a top 5 defender in the world right now, both among casual fans and analytical minds. This offer, while not the most unfair I've seen for Dougie, still isn't close.
He's worth that deal for the following reasons:
He's younger than EK and DD were
He's always had these underlying numbers and is finally turning them into basic productions stats
He's going to win a Norris in the next 3 years (book it)
He's elite offensively, and above-average defensively, AND ELITE in transition. Only one other D man in the league has stats that compare to Dougie in all three regards, this bum is someone named Victor Hedman.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you didn't watch Carolina this year, because it was just clear to see when Dougie was healthy, he was a different level.
