This is just trade is terrible for AVs. They would not even consider it. Rantanen may not be as good as Matthew's but I would take Kadri over Johnson and tips the balance with the rententuon in Leafs favor in a big way.

This kind of post is why people hate the Leafs.

Why would Colorado trade a forward who admittedly gets carried by MacKinnon for one that couldn't score on a Zamboni driver?

MacKinnon's EV_xGAA without Rantanen is still elite, Rantanen's without MacKinnon are shocking. MacKinnon carries that whole line. I'm not saying Rantanen and Landeskog aren't great players, but MacKinnon really does push that line to the next level.

Well yeah, Mackinnon would push any line to the next level obviously. Doesn't mean that Rantanen gets carried. He's just less of an individual player than Mackinnon is, but if you give him a decent center (eg. Kadri) then he'll still produce reasonably well.

More interesting would be trading Marner to Colorado for Makar (add pieces to either side).

Colorado never takes that deal. Too much would need to be added on Toronto's side.

Colorado would need to add a significant amount which I'm not sure they are willing to do. Plus Timmins isn't really an upgrade on the blueline for the Leafs this season. It would be like trading Marner for Liljegren. It doesn't make much sense unless the Leafs are rebuilding.

Maybe Byram + Timmins for Marner and then the Leafs sign Pietrangelo. It's a stretch though.
