Different Take on the Usually Seen Ottawa Trade

Description
Ottawa gets a reliable young Goaltender, without having to pay any of the more expensive UFA options.

Rangers get the equivalent of a Late 1st Round Pick, while also riding themselves of Smith.

Smith by himself would have netted a 4th Round Pick for Ottawa. Rangers make it a 3rd to bridge the gap in acquiring the better Pick.

Ottawa gets a solid Goaltender while simply moving one of their 4 2nd Rounders back.

Ranger fans don't get the multiple high Picks they were looking for, but get 1 solid Pick while dumping Cap.

I don’t know if I like it. Cuz at 33rd overall, we could get a stud like Peterka, Reichel etc

It's pretty good, although it puts OTT in a pickle with deciding which goaltender should they protect in Georgiev, Högberg or Gustavsson.

All of them have NHL potential.

I thought about that before I posted. From what I gathered among Ottawa pages, is that many see Hogberg as more of a glorified Backup, and are 50/50 at best on Gustavsson. Figured Georgiev could be more enticing than anything they currently have in their system.

Sens have good goalies. They can afford to wait and let them figure it out. Much rather just keep the 2nd.

I don't think it's really even a discussion. Georgiev has way more experience and success than Hogberg and Gustavsson has been an average AHLer

Uhhhhh... maybe but those aren't even proven 1A or 1B goalies where as Georgiev is that (and sightly more), he's still young, wouldn't cost a ton (looking at you Melnyk) and you still get another pick

Here's a thought, take one of their goalies and add a prospect from NYR to the trade.

Let's say Högberg and Rykov for example.

Other pieces could possibly be discussed, but the Rangers already have Wall, Huska and Lindblom as potential future Backups behind Shesterkin. No need for another one, who hasn't really proven much.

It's not totally ridiculous, but if I'm Ottawa I'm more than comfortable betting on the guys they have, and betting on the Sens goalie coach Pierre Groulx. The answer to the goalie question is in the organization.

Daccord is the guy imo. He's so great with his movement and positioning, and he sees and processes the game at an incredibly high level.

Also just in terms of personality he's an absolute gem, and he's so easy to root for.

Ottawa having 10 picks in the top 100 in this upcoming draft might do wonders for their rebuild. I can see your point about wanting to keep all of those picks. Especially if it's as deep of a draft as the exBerts say.

Considering the expansion draft after next season, I don't see the Rangers going big into the UFA market - so Smith (and Staal) are actually kind of needed. Can't see NYR adding a pick for a team to take Smith as a salary dump.

I don’t mind trading 2nd round picks. But not the 3 1sts And the early 2nd unless it’s to move up. I’d trade the Isles pick and other assets for a guy like Cirelli, Tkachuk etc

i'm down with it. giving ottawa that 3rd is generous but i'd still be down with this. i proposed trades like this with the wings and other teams in the past. i think it's a great idea. something i would be cool with is keeping the 3rd and taking the stars 2nd instead of ottawa's. either way i'm cool with it. makes a lot of sense for both teams. rangers get cap space and ottawa gets a good goalie while not having to give up a lot of assets. win, win for both teams.

Smith and Staal are both taking up space right now. Not needed at all. And the Expansion Draft takes place just after their Contracts expire, so it doesn't really pertain to them in any way.

Rangers absolutely need to give something up to move Smith, if he were moved by himself. That's partially why I created this proposal like I did. Equal parts give AND take.

I like this a lot for Ottawa. And if Seattle wants to take Hogberg that's fine, I don't see him becoming much more than a backup who's good for 25-30 games anyways, and hopefully Daccord will be ready to make the jump by then. Nilsson is also expiring, and so it might be a good idea to send him off sooner rather than later. These are exactly the types of trades that Dorion should be making with all of our cap space.
