GMs have learned from VGK that paying 1st, 2nd and 3rd for one year of Tatar is NOT a wise move.

I'm an Avs fan. I don't necessarily think Tatar would be worth a 1st+2nd+3rd + prospect, but that would probably be close to Montreal's ask in the offseason. It would likely cost more in draft picks due to the fact that Colorado wouldn't be sending back a roster player (eg. Graves) in the trade.

Note that the previous 1st+2nd+3rd package for Tatar was a deadline day trade, and Tatar has since put up a couple of really good seasons and has some of the best possession stats in the league this season.

In any case, what would you consider to be a fair offer for Tatar? 1st + 2nd + prospect? 1st+ 3rd + prospect?

Jost is about equivalent to a 2nd + 3rd, so that sounds about right. Not sure if Montreal have interest in Jost though.

Maybe there could be a conditional pick sent to Montreal if Tatar resigns in Colorado. Though I'm quite weary of being the team that extends a 30+ player after his best two seasons.

Tatar is a 60 PT winger that plays on one of the best defensive lines in hockey. Montreal would have no interest in trading him for that little of a package.

2 reasons:

1. Montreal doesn't need to trade them, they are some of their best players and on good contracts on a team that's not up against the cap.
2. Because no team trades their best winger or (second?) best defenseman for cheap, if they do, your team is welcome to go trade for them instead.

Wasn’t directed at you just kind where I finally ended up saying something. Tatar is a good player but on an expiring contract. I think anything more than a first round pick is too much. Extended, he’s absolutely worth more. But there’s also that he didn’t fit in with Vegas red flag that might make some GMs hesitate

I never said Montreal should trade either. I’m talking about every time I see them in a trade on this site. Both are very good players, but both only have a year remaining and will be 30+ when their next deal starts. And people seem to think they’re worth way more than a rental. I saw a serious conversation asking what the Stars would have to ADD after Harley to get Petry. That’s ridiculous. You aren’t gonna fix your left side D with a 32 year old on an expiring contract. Sorry

The Vegas situation has extenuating circumstances though. It was a dumb trade by McPhee right from the start because coach Gallant chose to stick with his top 9 and thus Tatar was playing 4th line minutes.

Based on the reports that both teams had heavily scouted each other last year, one would assume that trade would include roster players and not prospects. You don't scout another NHL team if you're only interested in their prospects...

I think Habs targeted Jost, Girard and others...

The thing is Tatar's value is higher than when he was in Detroit. Better production than when he left Detroit by replacing Pacioretty to some extent. (2nd scoring in 1st season in MTL, no1 scorer in MTL this current season - and that's on team that has had trouble to score.) Also this current TDL makes GM overpay like it was an auction house. (Coleman for Nolan Foote and a 1st or something worse....Goodrow for a 1st)

Apparently, Tyson Jost was the Habs target if Sergachev wasn't available at no9. Also, I don't think the Avs are trading Girard, especially after signing that contract and the fact that Byram has yet to prove himself. If I'm corrected, Tyson Barrie was traded after Cale Makar proved his worth during the 2019 playoffs.

Girard is Colorado's top shutdown defender (don't let his size fool you) and he's locked in for 7 years at a team friendly $5m. At this stage he's more valuable than Byram, so there's no way he gets traded.

I agree about Jost though. Montreals scout Trevor TImmins likes Jost so I could see Jost being of interest to him potentially.

I could see Habs getting Jost + 1st for Tatar.

Can anyone tell me what the ceiling on Jost is? 'cause Tuna is a bonafide 20 goal - 30 assists kinda top-6 winger.

Hard to tell what Jost's ceiling is as he's not really been playing in top 6 minutes all that much. But when he has he's generally done well (eg. 7 points in 9 games after the deadline this year). At worst he's probably a reasonably solid 3C, but could also be a 2C if he can find his offensive game in the NHL. Avs have been using him mostly as a 3rd line winger but that has more to do with the fact that we have Kadri as 2C and Compher as 3c.

Hmmm. My question now becomes : would Mtl be thinking of using Jost as a C or at LW? Because we already have Danault, Susuki, Domi, Kotkaniemi, etc.

Anyways, Jost and a 1st, I'm in. But I think this trade only happens once Domi is either signed or traded...

Danault is an UFA in 2021 so I wouldn't necessarily count on him long-term. Particularly as you have several other C's on the team you'll want to have take over on the top 2 lines (i.e. Suzuki, Kotkaniemi).

If you move Danault you can run with Suzuki/Kotkaniemi/Jost down the middle. Alternatively one of Jost or Kotkaniemi can play on the wing. Jost is quite a versatile player and can play up or down the lineup so he offers a lot of flexibility.

I don't think Habs in a hurry to part ways with Danault, a steady top-9 forward, great in the faceoff circle.

Both Coleman and Goodrow were two year investments. Tampa did those acquisitions in purpose. They are not comparable trades.

Tatar is a rental.

2 this year with both being a bit circumstantial, as Pageau being a sign-and-trade effectively and Taylor Hall, who is a former MVP of the league and not exactly comparable to Tatar...
