I want to continue this back and forth because i find it an enjoyable conversation (sorry Op for the pings)
Flames were also playing very well since the deadline. They handed Boston their 2nd regulation loss at home in a 5-2 win, lost in OT game to Nashville, lost to the 2nd hottest team in the league Tampa (4-3), won their next 3 games in a row before loosing to Vegas in a close game.
As for the Forward comparisons
Gaudreau > Connor, Scheifele > Monahan, Lindholm = Wheeler (fairly close)
Tkachuk = Laine (fairly close), Backlund > Eakin, Ehlers > Mangiapane
I think the bottom 6's mirror pretty well
Firstly, I like this conversation too 😊
I cant really go into each game right now, but I can tell you that the jets had a compete level I haven’t seen in them since 2015 when they somehow squeaked into the playoffs and played each game toe-to-toe with the conference leaders in ANA (albeit they still lost all 4 games by a goal). The difference now is that the jets have the skill and goaltending to win those 1 goal games. Finally over the last 2-3 games they had a healthy squad for the first time since November (except for little) and I’m pretty sure they won all of them if memory serves me right. Now add a .5 pt/gm little.
Finally they jets won 5 of their last 6 before the stoppage. Of those teams WSH, VGK, EDM. ARI. He only loss was EDM. And before that streak and overtime thriller against WSH where the jets almost compelted a comeback but lost in a shootout
Now for the top 6 comparisons I would say ehlers > backlund and eakin = mangiapane giving the slight edge to the jets. Ehlers-eakin-laine also found great chemistry before the break and were contributing 1-2 goals a game. The top line was giving 2-3. So that’s 3-5 goals a game from our top 6. That’s elite top 6 production. Idk much about the flames but on paper their top 6 doesn’t look that lethal.
Now comparing bottom 6:
Little>Ryan, Lowry=lucic (if not better), roslovic>Dubé (ever so slightly), perreault=Bennett, copp>jankowski, appleton>reider (slightly again)
Therefore the jets bottom is better
Jets goaltending is better hands down so there’s that.
Now defence:
Cgy top pair > WPG top pair (quite a big difference)
Cgy middle pair > jets middle pair (slightly)
Cgy bottom pair >> jets bottom pair
So the flames have an advantage on defence. Now add defence and goaltending together and I think the two teams are even.
Forwards are the deciding factor and I simply think that though the jets have a better bottom 6 in general, it’s also higher scoring which will prove to be the difference
