Description
While I admit I have made a Lias/Poolparty proposal or 2, the fact is, the Rangers need more help at C then on the Wing. Probably better to give Lias one more crack at it, as long as he hasn't completely burned his bridge with NY.

He would get slotted on the 4th Line again, but with upgraded Wingers. Lemieux and Gauthier will provide much opportunities for him to succeed that with the Brendan Smith's and Michael Haley's of the world.

Not impressed with Howden (don't think anyone is) at C. Give him a shot on the Wing to see if he can improve. If he does, then great. If he doesn't, then he serves a purpose by being exposed in the Expansion Draft. Same reason I have Hajek in. Even if he doesn't succeed, he gains more games to become eligible for Expansion Draft as a piece to be exposed (K'Andre Miller called up Midseason).

Where is fast?

I want to resign him. Badly. With all the money currently on the table (Panarin, Kreider, Trouba), and the raises yet to be given (Zibenejad and DeAngelo soon, with the likes of Chytil, Fox Shesterkin and Kakko later) even after Lundqvist, Smith and Staal come off the books, I am on the fence about whether they resign him or not. If they think it could work, I am all for it.

Hes a role player we're gonna need to win, and when nils comes up one of Dlo or trouba is gone anyway so im pretty sure we'll manage, not to mention all the money we'll get back from smith, staal and hank

Think around $2.75M over 3 or 4 years is fair?

Getting rid of Smith will cost you more than a fourth rounder

Most disagree. Ottawa needs to get near the Cap floor. Don't think it would cost much more. Maybe a 3rd, but nothing more than that.

Ottawa won’t have an issue getting to the floor. If there was only a team or two with guys to dump then a fourth might get it done. This is similar to somebody thinking they can get Tyler Johnson from Tampa for a couple of fourth rounders. Yes they need to get rid of salary and don’t have a lot of leverage, but there will be multiple teams interested in getting a solid forward at a discounted rate which will drive the price up some. Yes Ottawa needs to add to get to the floor, but they can grab guys on one year deals and flip them at the deadline. Or they can take multiple offers and take the best one. I feel like with how the league is they can do better than a fourth round pick for that much cap space if they work the phones and they will. One year of Marleau was worth a first

There is a huge difference between acquiring 1 year of Brendan Smith and 4 years of Tyler Johnson. Not even remotely comparable.

Even with Tampa needing to move salary, no one in their right mind would think a 4th Rounder would get the job done.

If they can pull that off (market value tends to drive prices up higher), then yes, I would factor Fast into this lineup.

I never said the players were comparable. You’re completely missing my point. And I never said a fourth would get the job done. I said people think they can get guys from teams in cap trouble for pennies on the dollar and think they can dump salary on teams with cap space without paying a premium. These two players were just examples not comparable

Marleau got dumped for a 1st, and that had more to do with it being a 35+ Contract that normal Buyout rules wouldn't apply to (and the Leafs being in a competitive window where they desperately needed wiggle room).

Smith is a 1 year deal. About $2M less. Not 35+. And while they would prefer to get rid of him right away, a Buyout could happen for him instead of paying too much to ship him. So maybe a 3rd instead of a 4th, but that's the limit of what the Senators could ask. The Rangers aren't desperate enough where they could get more.

Understood on Marleau. I just don’t think the CBO everybody is hoping for is gonna happen. So teams with room to take on bad salaries will be in a very good spot. For sure a third. Second doesn’t sound unreasonable if the demand is there

Yeah, I have come around on CBO's, as well. Started hoping they were a possibility earlier on, but now they seem like a pipe dream.
