Couldn't you just exploit the CBO system by buying out someone like Tavares and re-signing him at league minimum?

You have to wait a year before resigning someone you buy out

Why not set up a trade with a team like Edmonton where you trade Matthews and they trade you Mcdavid with the stipulation that they will both be bought out and then you could sign them at league minimum.

Bc the nhl and nhlpa won’t agree for cbos to happen to allow teams to make a Mockery of them

If they do allow cbos there will be strict guidelines on these special buyout

They get paid a million more per year and simultaneously allow the team to put better players around them

You would obviously need something in writing stating that the players would re-sign for a certain amount after being bought out

The NHL wouldn't allow such a mockery and the NHLPA wouldn't like it because it would depress salaries

The real answer is no cap or a franchise tag but the nhl cares too much about parity

yes he is lul. Marner can easily command a top 15 first as he is one of the best RW in the NHL. Any 1st under would be rejected by Dubas. In general this offer is not even close to what Marner can get and Dubas would reject and hang up.
