You would get a really good controlled young top 6 center, a young top 4 good RD, at least 1 first round pick, and a teams top 3 prospect. He is my number 6 center as of right now and is still very young. It will have to be a MASSIVE haul to even get them to consider it.

Switch Werenski with PLD and it’s probably closer for this example.

Matthews for a top pair RHD who’s under 26 with term and a replacement top 6 center again under 26 with term. He’s a top 20 player in the league, top 10 offensive player in the league and arguably the second best sniper in the league. I don’t think you can quantify a return that Toronto doesn’t lose when trading Matthews.

That same can be said for Eichel, McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin and Pettersson just to name a few examples.

You want to know his value? According to Dom Luszczyszyn of the Athletic, his GSVA (Game Score Value Added) is 4.93...Seth Jones and Zach Werenski combined are 3.40. Now these change year to year and on different teams this may change. Just thought I'd let you know their advanced metrics "value"

He's a franchise cornerstone C under contract. His value is extremely high! almost unmeasurable

GSVA is heavily weighted toward the forward. The 2 categories that address defensive play are both weighted 0.05

5-on-5 Corsi Differential: 0.05

I think this is a good offer in terms of value, affordability, projection, team needs etc. But for those same reasons Arizona probably declines. Unless they think the off-ice effect of having Matthews is more impactful, which is a possibility... still dont think tor would trade their franchise player.

True, but Matthews is still the highest rated forward whereas Jones and Werenski aren't even top 25 Defense if we're going off of Dom's GSVA list

Matthews is great player. I know not many people put a lot of stock in to player rankings and I'm one them. Now NHL.com, Sportsnet.ca and the Sporting News all do one of these lists. Jones is rated 5th, 8th and 11th respectively. Werenski is rated 20th, 16th and 21st respectively. Sportsnet.ca's rankings are over a 3 season period. Now with 3 respected media outlets have these 2 players with similar rankings. I think most will agree that Jones and Werenski are both easily in the top 25.

Not disagreeing with you at all on Jones or Werenski. The original post was just questioning his value. So I put it into the best possible numerical terms possible. Anybody with a hockey sense and two eyes could tell that Jones and Werenski are top D-Men (which is why I said "if we are going off of Dom's list"). What sucks is that it's so hard to measure value of players because so many factors affect your statistics. What system do you play in? Who do you play with? What's your role on the team? Auston Matthews 4.93 on Maple Leafs might be significantly lower on the Blue Jackets and vice versa for Werenski and Jones on the Maple Leafs. That's why I said earlier that if this trade happen, both Jones and Werenski could boom in terms of GSVA whereas Matthews numbers could fall.

So really GSVA isn't perfect, but in terms of a players "value" I do believe it's best statistic we have out there. That's my whole point.
