Won’t be easy icing three lines and 5 D every night. But at least you’ve got Matthews.

he probably was thinking of leaving toronto when babs was here not now. especially since the leafs are going to offer and arm and leg at him. the leafs are the largest hockey market in the world. he probably will consider that, why would he leave toronto for arizona tbh. they probably won’t have a team by then and they won’t be able to affor him.

When he becomes a UFA, he's as good as gone. The Coyotes would pay a kings ransom for him, and it's his home. He would be the first really big star that they have had in a long time.

To play in home. Funny actually to say that as its probably the most common basis for why Leafs fans tend to acquire UFAs with underpaying them. "To play in their home team." Also how many times last summer there were Leafs fans saying this such as "Marner will take a hometown discount." etc.

It's sort of ironic, you know.

Obviously needs to be complete but a sharks fan would need that explained.

Now I'm realistic enough to know that Matthews has a one in thirty two change of resigning with the Leafs when he's a UFA. But it sure is nonsense that Matthews will sign with Arizona as a UFA. Matthews wants to be "the guy" in a hockey market....a big US market. Arizona, cmon, even when the Leafs play there one game a year the arena isn't sold out. And the fans, mostly Leaf fans...snowbirds. Hardly a place Matthews wants to be as one of the premier players.
Matthews and almost all NHLers are more worldly to sign with a team just because that team is place where he was born 25 years ago.

1967! Nothing for him in Toronto! Leafs are all talk and no action! You’ll never win a cup!

If you ask me, I think the next Arizona equivalent is going to be Honolulu Sunburns.

In all seriousness, I believe they'll be migrating to Canada if something.

Meh, they've been saying that about the Coyotes every year since they moved to Arizona. So while you might presume they will move, I will believe it when I see it. If anything, paying Matthews more in a cap situation that probably still won't be that much higher than today is concerning for whoever signs him.

The Coyotes reportedly lost $15M last year, only the Panthers did worse. COVID-related lost revenue is going to force these teams to make a move quickly, as their losses will mount rapidly in the near future. The last thing Bettman wants is to have a bankruptcy on his hands, so things will move more quickly now than ever before.
