Signing the Big Boys - Hughes and Pettersson

Description
Looking at one possible options for the Canucks going forward. This one involves using bridge deals similar to the ones handed to Horvat and Boeser. Both deals are back-loaded leading to a minimum qualifying offer being $10M+ at their respective age of 25. Here are some further details for the Armchair GM:

- I don't see Loui being on this team, whether it's through buy out or LTIR, he's gone.
- Hog, Pod and Rathbone/Juolevi have to step into important roles due to the cap constraint.
- Markstrom and Demko are resigned. They get to play it out to see who avoids expansion.
- There are going to be UFA's signed (maybe a bottom-six winger and veteran right-handed D?).
- Maybe they sign back Pearson if Hog or Pod aren't ready.
- Trade one of Virtanen or Boeser (or not sign Toffoli) to make room from Podkolzin/Lind.
- Cap stays the same (who knows where will be when COVID-19 is done).

Let me know your thoughts!

*EDIT* Fixed Hughes and Pettersson's deals to end the year before the RFA eligibility ends

Hughes won't be offersheet/arb eligible when his deal ends this year. Same situation that Boeser was in. So it makes sense for them to come up with a deal like this, especially with the Canucks cap crunch

I'm pretty sure he can be offer sheeted when his contract is up. If he took that cheap of a deal it would be on a 2 year deal

Like the Timo Meier deal right?

Exactly! Players aren't dumb. If they see that there's a chance for them to win and they can still make their money, they'll do it.

Because he played games during the 2018-19 season after signing with the Canucks, his expiry status became RFA 10.2(c). If you look this up in the NHL CBA FAQ portion of the Capfriendly site, you will see that this definition comes up for the type of status:

"The player is only eligible to negotiate and sign a contract with the club that holds their signing rights. They are ineligible to negotiate a contract (offer sheet) with any other club. They are also ineligible for arbitration." - https://www.capfriendly.com/faq (What is a 10.2(c) player?)

This means that although he will make a lot of money on his next contract, the Canucks have much more leverage than he does.

Yeah no doubt they'd match but the price would be that high to resign them

Yeah could be up to 20% of the cap - yikes!!

You pay what you have to pay for elite talents like Pettersson and Hughes. Yes it may be 20% of the $81.5M salary cap, but guess what? When the NHL signs the new TV deal, the Seattle expansion is finalized and the general inflation of the cap happens (fingers crossed COVID doesn't hurt too much), they will look a lot better.

Even then if the cap stays the same for the foreseeable future, you sign these guys to what they are worth.

Yeah but let's be honest, not at ALL cost, and not to become TML 2.0...!
