Signing the Big Boys - Hughes and Pettersson

Créé par: hockeybadger
Équipe: 2021-22 Canucks de Vancouver
Date de création initiale: 19 mai 2020

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Looking at one possible options for the Canucks going forward. This one involves using bridge deals similar to the ones handed to Horvat and Boeser. Both deals are back-loaded leading to a minimum qualifying offer being $10M+ at their respective age of 25. Here are some further details for the Armchair GM:

- I don't see Loui being on this team, whether it's through buy out or LTIR, he's gone.
- Hog, Pod and Rathbone/Juolevi have to step into important roles due to the cap constraint.
- Markstrom and Demko are resigned. They get to play it out to see who avoids expansion.
- There are going to be UFA's signed (maybe a bottom-six winger and veteran right-handed D?).
- Maybe they sign back Pearson if Hog or Pod aren't ready.
- Trade one of Virtanen or Boeser (or not sign Toffoli) to make room from Podkolzin/Lind.
- Cap stays the same (who knows where will be when COVID-19 is done).

Let me know your thoughts!

*EDIT* Fixed Hughes and Pettersson's deals to end the year before the RFA eligibility ends

Can't see the cap staying same in 2021-22. Next year, yes, but three years with the same cap just seems unreasonable.

Moving Eriksson is going to cost you high level asset. Expecting Juolevi+2021 1st being in the ballpark of what you lose if you want to move him for nothing.

Demko is probably going to Seattle.

Pettersson's cost is going to be in the Marner range. Hughes also close to $10M...

Nice bridge deals like this are probably the best case scenario for the players; they're still young enough to sign mega-money 8 year deals when the bridge is over. And if the cap is still 81.5 at the beginning of 2021 the only way Petey gets an 11 AAV on an 8 year deal is if he's in the running for the Hart/Art Ross.

As for expansion, if Seattle doesn't like Markstrom's contract then they probably take whoever isn't protected out of Stecher/Juolevi/Rafferty.

Lots of bridge deals were signed last summer, there's no reason to think Pettersson and QHughes wouldn't sign bridge deals as well.

4/5 years isn't a bridge. The guys that bridged also weren't quite their calibre. When someone offers pettersson 12 x (term of his choice greater than 3), I wouldn't bet on him taking 8x4. Same logic for Hughes. Just get your big guys locked up at the price that they've earned.

So three years is a bridge but four isn't?
Meier signed a four year deal I think, idk, it'll all just depend on if they want to be Canucks or not but yeah I agree, signing Pettersson to an Eichel like contract ASAP should be Benning's top priority.

Questions for the experts here:
1) Think a 4Y deal to Pett walks him right to UFA?, and
2) A 5Y deal to Hughes buys 1-yr of FA and then he's UFA...?
Thoughts all?

3 years is as long of a bridge as I'd sign. Why would they sign bridges when they could lock up their 80M+ if they wanted to? None of the guys bridged last summer could do the same

Gotta "bridge" them for less term 2Y/3Y or go big w/ 6/7/8yr deals...

I don't understand why they'd bridge tho when they can secure 80M+ from many different teams... I'm sure the Devils would OS the 10x8 for Hughes, at least...

Cheers - IMO the agents see 8-years as an "albatross"?
The goal is to get players a couple of "young-man deals" first as the 30-something/UFA in the NHL, which used to have clout, is a dead-duck!

Hughes won't be offersheet/arb eligible when his deal ends this year. Same situation that Boeser was in. So it makes sense for them to come up with a deal like this, especially with the Canucks cap crunch

Agree, that OS could happen but saw a post the other day by BCarlo = the last successful offer sheet was Dustin Penner!!! (B. Burke was still in the NHL-fold and not on TV!)...
Van would and could match tbh.
There's a lot of deadwood in Loui/Sutter/Beagle/Roussel/Ferland/Sven B etc.
Some can be traded for 5/6/7th rd pick-parts, and Aquilini has and will buy out dudes if it's EP40/QH that are the assets to protect!

Those deals are meant to bring them up to one year left of RFA eligibility. With their salary being $10M+ in the final year of the contract the minimum the Canucks could sign them to would be that with a qualifying offer (unless for some reason they aren't performing and they manage to sign another deal, whilst risking them walking as free agents).

I stated that in the 2020-2021 season the Canucks have Markstrom and Demko duke it out to see who gets made available for the expansion draft (most likely candidate). But that wasn't the focus of this exercise.

The Canucks will match any offer...

Think CF has a "wee bug" as other posters have mentioned to me on other threads...
When the new season is officially posted, the trades you show above for QH/EP40 will become UFAs (not RFAs)...
