eh I don't think Montour is worth more than a first round pick and prospect. you could argue for a slightly better prospect maybe Pinho. Also nobody is giving away Lotto type picks for him..

I would argue a first rounder maybe too much given the UFA market on defense. Adding a prospect Buffalo should take it and run.

yeah. idk when a 1st round pick stopped becoming valuable. people act like late 1st round picks aren't good. Washington got McMichael with a late pick and hes a top 20 prospect. Nobody is giving a top 10 pick for this guy and after the top 10 the talent level pretty much levels out.

Lol. Some here 100% over value players when they don't look at the market. That market for defense right now is soft given that UFA class, and given Mountour is a RD that market is softer.

See that with the Habs (Mete), Leafs (Bracco) etc.

At the end of the day, yiu could go sign a Hamonic for similar money and end up with a rather similar defensman. Buffao's net return would be zero.

Yeah! fans of SOME teams definitely glorify their players more than others. I even try to overpay and still get told its not enough.

2019 RFA compensation for $4.227M is just a 2nd. $4.25M is a 1st and 3rd. These $ amounts bump up a little each year, so for the summer of 2020 $4.25M might be just a 2nd. Yeah, they could match, but then what? Then ugly stuff of a player that doesn't want to be there and a team that didn't offer him a good contract to begin with. A 1st and a meh-prospect is better than a 2nd and better than matching.

Oh yeah. So many factors vakuing a player. Contract, age, talent, term. All factor in.

Maybe because he knew it was fair compensation and that the canes would easily match it.

I'm saying it is a possibility. If you are negotiating and your current team is lowballing that is not good for relations. If another team then comes along with an offer that is better to a point that you sign that deal instead of what your current team is offering... they probably were lowballing. (Outside deals like Weber signed) Then your original team suddenly says, "Yeah, we will pay you that." What the? That's shady pool and can cause ugliness.

Aho calls the situation "uncomfortable" and apparently it was a relaxed version of the situation as Waddell was on record before that as saying that they would match anything that was offered. It could easily go the other way though.

Agree with wojme. It was simply a negotiation tactic.

Ok, that’s a solid offer! Never been a huge fan of Benning, and with Bouchard coming in we could trade one of him or Larsson. I accept!!

or maybe he was getting lowballed? the he doesn't have to sign the offersheet again he could have just told gm that was the offer and they could hve matched it but im assuming that wasn't the case

that's could be true but if you are in a good relationship with your team/GM why even sign the sheet? Marner claims he had multiple offersheet and he didn't sign them. just saying imo you don't sign an offersheet if your gm isn't lowballing you.

Oh, I have no doubt that the GM was lowballing him. Its Carolina after all. He probably wanted to short circuit the negotiations with the offer sheet - it's like saying "see? I AM worth this much... and the ball's in your court now!"

They probably would have arrived at a similar number (but longer term) had they wanted to spend the time haggling. The offer sheet was his way of getting it done much faster.

oh I completely agree but the way I view it if he was in love with the Canes he wouldn't even risk them not matching. this was a f u pay me

For montour, I'd say make it 2020 first, or add a slightly better prospect (preferably a forward) or lower picks to balance. Not a bad starting point though

2020 is too deep of a draft. Nobody is giving up 1sts. Imo they aren’t getting a much meter offer than this

Then a better prospect. Idk if it's any deeper or not then 2021, is more too heavy for sure, but where Wash 1st will be, don't think it's that crazy. I mean, there have been 9 first rounders traded in 2020 lol, doesn't sound like no one is giving them up....

How many were traded before the season started? I’ll be more clear Washington isn’t trading their 2020 1st. No reason to.

Don't know why that matters, as it's not like they don't predict/now the strength of the class a couple years prior give or take. But to answer your question, 5 were traded near the deadline and a sixth was traded in the Hall deal mid season. So at least 66% of the firsts that were dealt were around February. And around 33% of the teams have moved their first. I'm just saying, the "no one is trading the 2020 firsts" is a myth
