Florida's payroll goes down $5.8 million next season due solely to internal contract terms (check out Barkov's), so buying out Bobrowsky alone gets the Panthers down $10 million. But buying Bobrowsky out costs Florida $47 million to pay a guy not to play for them, which this franchise can't afford to do.

The net result of adding Andersen, Domi and Johnsson ($13.4 million) in exchange for Matheson and Connolly ($8.375 million) is to increase payroll $5 million, which isn't made up for with the minimal amounts to be paid to Marchment, Schutz, Wallmark and Weegar.

The reason why you think you've cut $10 million from Florida's cap hit is that you haven't re-signed Dadanov, Haula and Hoffman, who total more than that figure.

It's $47.5 million, but your point remains well-taken.

Florida can't afford to buy Bobrowsky out, and I doubt any other team can, either.

Hoffman/Dadonov likely get 7m+. No way they can keep them.

You're missing the point. Dadanov and Hoffman together THIS YEAR total a little more than $9 million, so by simply not re-signing them, you've "saved" that amount. That's why your construction appears to be a $10 million cut from the current roster, but it really doesn't accomplish anything.

I tried to make a team that would make management enough to not even think about moving.

IMO next 3-4 years they move to Hamilton
NJ moves to QBC
ARI moves Houston

Salary cap reduction isnt something that is going to affect teams the way some fans think it will. A passing understanding of how the CBA coupled with the salary cap structure is needed to understand what a 10mill salary cap role back actually means. IT DOES NOT MEAN AND NEVER WILL MEAN THAT TEAMS NEED TO CUT ANY PLAYER OR PLAYERS TO REDUCE SALARY BY 10MILL. If u want a more in depth explanation ill give it. A qick explanation is NHLPA is a unionized work force and every team cutting 10 mill means less jobs. Union will never agree to this. A role back of each of the 600 nhl players salry by a curtain percent. Essentially each player gets the same percentage of team salary cap but the salary cap is reduced. This is the most likely. There are other options that invlove escrow but i left my economics degree at home.

It's the management and ownership cutting the money not the NHL. I'm sure Arizona and co will have to do something similar.

In an effort to save us from re-visiting this subject in the future:

Difference between this year's salary and next season's salary for Ekblad: - $3,000,000
Difference between this year's salary and next season's salary for Barkov: - $2,150,000
Difference between this year's salary and next season's salary for Huberdeau: - $900,000
Difference between this year's salary and next season's salary for Bobrowsky: + 500,000
Difference between this year's salary and next season's salary for Acciari: - $500,000
Net result of internal contract changes: - $6,050,000

Not re-signing Hoffman: - $5,650,000
Not re-signing Dadanov: - $3,600,000
Not re-signing Pysyk: - $3,500,000
Not re-signing Haula: - $2,750,000
Letting Free Agents go: -$15,500,000

In short, there is $11 million in the budget to (1) re-sign Haula, whom they really need for their #2 C, (2) re-sign their RFA's, of whom only Wallmark and Weegar are likely to get significant raises, and (3) replace Dadanov, Hoffman and Pysyk, and still net a payroll reduction of $10 million.

I was really disappointed when Bob left Columbus last year, but now Jarmo is looking like a genius...and Florida is probably suffering a serious case of buyer's remorse.

Even if Bob returns near his old form, Merzlikins and Korpisalo seem adequate replacements for him, and at a much lower cost.
