So if that contract is considered cheap and easily matchable, and Marner is better then Barzal, then how tf is Marner's contract so horrendous.

$7.5m is a lot cheaper than $11m...

Forgot to send a 1st to Ottawa in the Rask deal. Nobody is trading for Rask.

It’s a very matchable contract given the quality of the player. Question is with two other important RFAs to sign (Pulock, Toews), Cizikas and Pelech coming off IR and a flat cap, will the Isles have the means to match?

If Ottawa gives him 2C minutes and he plays well they could flip him at the deadline for a higher pick just like they did with Namestnikov. Rask still plays a premium position.

I think Islanders match this I think you need to get closer to 10 where the Islanders decide they are better off spending money elsewhere.

You can go over the cap in the Off season. You match that deal in one second, and then you figure out how to make it work.

Rask isn't a 2C on any team In the league. Even for arguement sake, let's say none of Ottawa's young Cs make the team (will not happen), he's the 4th C at very best. White and Tierney blow him out of the water, and even Anisimov is better. I'd even move Nick Paul to 4C before having Rask.

Also the Namestnikov comparison doesn't work for several reasons. First off, Namestnikov was a free agent at the end of the year, so very worst case scenario he's still gone at the end of the year. Rask has two more seasons. Also the Sens got Names because they wanted to keep their young players In Belleville(not the case next year), and Namestnikov was better than the other options they had, which Rask is not. You're also wrong about the Sens flipping Vladdy for a higher pick. They gave a 4th, and got a 4th back.

for the islanders not to match, it would have to be a significant overpay, like 12 x 5 or something like that.

Honestly I think the only way the Isles don't match is if we had to give four 1sts in compensation.

Edit: just realized @Isles777 said basically the same thing

Im agree with others here. they can match it then figure out what to do. leddy could be traded. always buy someone out. clutterbuck. do bridge deals for pulock and toews 2/3 year deals. its the nhl always a way to do it.
