For the Habs to improve on offense & defense they'll have to give up their crown jewel in net. And yes, for the Habs to re-sign pillar players long-term (Gallagher, Danualt, Suzuki), their only option is departing with Price and his $10.5 million annual cap hit. Sakic is in need of a goaltender with a high pedigree, Price would waive his no-trade clause for a Cup contender in the Western Conference. MTL can ride Francouz and Crawford as BRIDGE goaltenders until Primeau is ready to go for the 2022/23 season. Give them both 40 games each and find out which one is good to go for a playoff run.
*Hey Price haters, Carey Price is regarded by players and GMs as the best goaltender in the world right now* Avs have too much cap space, they'll gladly take his remaining contract in full. This trade should make COL a cup contender for the next 3 yrs.
Both NYI and CBJ have cap troubles for next season ..... caused by a flat salary cap ($81.5 mill). Not enough money avail for Lou and Jarmo to entertain signing they 1st line centremen to lengthy contracts (Barzal and Dubois, respectively). MB should consider an offer sheet should the trade fail. 5 yr / 52.5 mill ($10.5 mill/yr) should do the trick.
Projected cap space - (81.5 mill salary cap spikes to 84.5 mill for 2021/22)
Word out of Montreal is Ilya Kovalchuk is a lock to return (likely 1 yr/3 mill deal with performance bonuses). Feeling is Tatar, Kovalchuk, Weal are not affordable to re-sign for 2021/22 season (unless Drouin is traded in 2021-22). All other UFA's/RFA's at start of 2021/22 (Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Armia, Lehkonen, Poehling, etc.) can be resigned at fair market value (total cap hit for top 23 players just under $82 mill for 2021/22 season).
2021/22 Contract Offers (UFA's/RFA's):
Gallagher 6 yr / 43.5 mill (7.25 mill/yr.)
Danualt 6 yr / 36 mill (6 mill/yr.)
Petry 4 yr / 22 mill (5.5 mill/yr.)
Armia 4 yr / 16 mill (4 mill/yr.)
Lehkonen 4 yr / 14 mill (3.5 mill/yr.)
Poehling 2 yr / 1.7 mill (850k/yr.)
Caufield 3 yr / 2.775 mill (925k/yr entry-level deal.)
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but on the trade market, Carey price has negative value.
That contract is a nuisance.
To be fair, by 2024 the salary cap for the NHL could be north of $88.5 mill .... which would not be as impactful for Price's contract (as a % of the cap). As well, Avs cap space is enormous, more than enough for Sakic to pull the trigger and take Price in full.
It will take a better offer then that to get the Isles to trade Barzal.
Would they match a Barzal 5 yr / 52.5 mill offer sheet should MB offer sheet him? I know Lou has said he'll offer sheet anything for Barzal but that cap hit is too much. May have to trade 2 players in a short window of time so as to match the offer sheet.

You realize you’re talking about a league that gets 75% of it’s revenue from the gate, and we’re in the middle of a pandemic, right?
I think we should be really hoping that the NHL has a season next year, and not worrying about when the cap will go up. It’s probably going to be a while.

This is why offer sheets aren’t a thing. When you get to the point where Lou isn’t comfortable with the cap, guess who else isn’t comfortable with it....and that someone would have to give up four first rounders too? Not happening.

Yes I believe that they would match the offer sheet and then make the trades. A lot of Gm’s hate the offer sheet and would probably help Lou out if they could.

haha thats a conspiracy theory. NYI looking at approx $8 mill cap deficit should they match $10.5 mill/yr offer sheet. What players do they move to match?

the compensation in 2 1st rounders and 1 2nd rounder for Lou. ($10.5/yr off sheets in compensation level 2). Just a thought. As well, NYI would emerge with approx. $8 mill cap deficit. What players do they move in short term to get under that cap scenario?

No idea who they move but I am sure Lou would find a solution. How many offer sheets have actually worked in the history of them? The Penner one by my Oilers was a disaster the moment it was made, the only saving grace is we got Klefbom out of him when he was traded.

he's not gonna give you 3 valueable players AND do you a favour. its gonna have to be Price+.

they are rare unicorns. MB's an aggressive hombre (Subban trade, Aho offer sheet). Itchy trigger finger ... could be too stressful financially for NYI

haha i think MB is doing Sakic a favour in this scenario. Best goalie in the world. Of course, Girard is a body blow, but Francouz becomes obsolete for COL in this scenario. Greer is strictly an AHL player, nothing more.

Why do you expect the cap to go up when they are going to lose all of their gate revenue for at least the rest of 2020 then whenever that ends will be trying to get money from fans who are broke from the pandemic?

Actually he have negative value just one cap friendly! He was viewed by the Players has the best goalie in Nhl in a survey. With over 50 % of the vote. It was the same with the Gm that took the survey he was still at the top of the list but with a lowest % of the vote around 39 % i think. So no he doesn’t have negative value. Sure Montreal would have to take back some salary and retain a portion of it but they would still get a good return since he still one of the best in the game.
