Description
Flat cap, one CBO, at least one trade.
I’m mirroring trades for the other teams and only using free agents once.
Buyout on Steen and had to dump Allen to pay for Pietrangelo. Realistically looks like more needs to go...Bozak, Bortuzzo? Is there a taker for Faulk?

Likely Husso.

Smith shouldn't be our target but I dunno if I would pencil Husso in. One rough season ended by injuries followed up by another one where he had been .900 then just started to come together at the pause. Good teams need two reliable goalies. I would target Hutton from the Sabres, he's better than he gets credit for, has history with the team and would be a good backup for one year to give Husso some more time, and we can probably get the Sabres to retain to roughly the same cap hit you've got for Smith. That is if they'll trade with us anymore.

Husso wasn't just coming together, though. He was maniacally dominating. His last 9 games before the pause: .955 save percentage. If you go back to his last 13 games: .939. I think he's ready now.

Hutton has been quite awful for Buffalo. This season, he was downright abysmal. Look over his whole career, that second season with the Blues was a total outlier.

All totally true and completely fair. I'm not married to the idea of having Hutton specifically, I just think it's an awfully big gamble to go into next season as cup contenders without any additional goaltending depth if we're forced to move Allen to keep Pietrangelo. I'm thinking about what happened to Toronto this year. And I know comparing Husso to Hutchison might not be fair, but thirteen games is a pretty small sample size and no one is a .939 forever, we know there's going to be some sort of regression there, and then who knows how good he'll be at the NHL level. The nice thing about having someone like Hutton (or whoever) and letting Husso get a few more reps in the AHL is that if Hutton is terrible and Husso is still good, we can just throw Hutton on waivers a la Chad Johnson and bring up Husso. Or if they both suck next year, Hutton can get shelled in the bigs instead of our top goaltending prospect. And if they are both good, no harm done. The most appealing thing about Husso though (other than his obvious upside and domination down the stretch) is that he only makes 700k
