AHL problems controversial idea NHL Ottawa

Description
With there being talk of the AHL possibility reducing teams next year as their revenue is so gate driven and only some AHL teams are owed by NHL teams and only some of those teams are able to support these AHL teams next year as it will be such a financial hit. With this in mind I was thinking a team like Ottawa would need an AHL team owned by an NHL team that does not mind paying for everything and would let Ottawa’s prospects take up spots on their AHL roster. I think the leafs would be the team to do that for a price obviously.

Keep Dermot, don't sign Dillon and then have a 22 or 23 man roster. More meaningless LTIR tradesshakes head

I don't understand the rationale here. The Sens own the Belleville Senators, and are just 3 years into an 8 year contract with the city of Belleville. Belleville isn't going to vanish. Even if a team was in a situation where it was no longer viable for them to remain open, any deals or agreements involving potential roster sharing wouldn't be manifested in a hockey trade involving picks and prospects. This whole thing makes absolutely no sense.

I don’t what or why you think Ottawa would trade Formenton.... even to save money. He is playing in Ottawa next year. Nice try though

They don't even save money. If Formenton is in the Minors, which he probably will be, Sens would end up paying more actual money to Nic Petan than they would to Formenton and Gaborik combined.

The AHL gets around 80% of its revenue from the gate and it is looking like there will be no attendance next year that means you would be operating at minimum 80% loss. Which sounds to me like a thing Melnyk is unwilling to do. The AHL has already talked about the real likely hood of cutting teams next year. There is no way another team just says sure we will let you take up roster spots, minutes and we will pay for it all with out getting anything in return. I don’t think the leafs would be willing to do it with for money as it does not mean much to them and I don’t see melnyk being willing to pay for it either so that leads to picks and or prospects. Or screwing up your prospects

I think you're overstating the hit they're taking. Most AHL teams are already operating at a loss, and while the loss of gate accounts for a significant portion of their revenue, the fact is it's still not actually all that significant in terms of the cost of Operating an NHL franchise. For context, Auston Matthews will probably make more on July 1st than Belleville will make in a season in ticket sales. Even a poor team like Ottawa can afford to keep the lights on, knowing how important it is for the long term success of the franchise.

So how money does it save Ottawa to trade Gaborik? Any? Isn't his contract insured like most contract?
