Lol don't take my comment seriously.. guy was trolling and I responded. I'm happy at who we got at #2 but he has an issue with it somehow
The way I see the Matthew's, Eichel debate is both have the same skill level but favor Eichel more cause he does the same without players like marner, tavares
But at the same time Matthew's really never had that situation.. maybe he'll keep producing or drop off or maybe even thrive.... that's my reason if I had to choose I know what I'm getting with Eichel.. Matthew's feels a bit more of a wild card in that factor nobody really lost this debate but both TOR and BUF won
I can understand why a lot of people think that's the case, but I think sometimes the quality of players that Matthews has played with is a bit overestimated, and the quality of players that eichel plays with are a bit underrated.
Matthews played his first season with rookie Brown, rookie Hyman, and rookie Nylander. Not terrible, but certainly not easy stepping into the league as an 18 year old and carrying some rookies. Eichel in that same year (his 2nd year) played with reinhart and Evander Kane, who had both had experience. He also played on the 2nd power play unit- not with Marner, kadri, bozak, JVR, and Rielly, which was an opportunity that was given to eichel.
In his second year, he did have some good line mates- he got Nylander and Hyman, but is that better than reinhart and prime 40g skinner? not at all, in fact, jack had better line mates.
In the third year, he got rookie Johnsson and a still developing kapanen, until post-contract war Nylander came back, and we all know how Nylander played after that. So is that really better than getting sam reinhart? not at all.
This year, Matthews clearly does play with better players.
The argument that he's sheltered by tavares is also minimal- he was the number one guy for 2 full seasons before tavares came, and it didn't slow him down. This year, he's taken over as the definitive #1C in all situations, so it was really only one year that he wasn't THE go to guy- tavares got the big matchups for one year, and kadri got them for the first half of his rookie season. Linemates are about equal over their careers, and Matthews has been a consistently better scorer across all 4 overlapping seasons. Also scores more goals, which are worth more imo. They also have comparable defensive numbers. That's why I think he's better
