Description
Saw someone post that PIT-EDM trade.
I think Edmonton moves Puljujarvi for cap space and MTL seems to be linked.
Chiasson is moved for cap space purposes.

If your so sure Puljujarvi is an NHLer, then lets say MTL gives up a 2021 5th round pick, which move up one round for each of the following, he signs with MTL, he plays 50 games at the NHL level (or prorated amount if the season is shortened), he scores at a better than .5 pts/gm pace (a 40 point pace). That's an easy 2nd round pick for EDM if Puljujavri can make an NHL roster, it's a 3rd even if he gets hurt. MTL can even throw in a 2020 5th if needed.

Rental third line forwards cost a 2nd round pick at minimum. I'd expect a player with RFA status to fetch more. Realistically, I'd be asking for a guaranteed 2nd this draft and a 5th round pick with similar conditions on it for next draft.

Carolina offered a 2nd + a prospect last fall. The deal didn't happen because the two sides couldn't agree on the prospect. Safe to say Puljujarvi's value has risen since then.

I did read that post, however I was looking at his history at the NHL level. It's besides the point though, since this conversation was started by me stating he wasn't an NHL 3rd liner and at this point he isn't. Would you trade a 2nd+ for a 22 year old prospect that's currently playing in Europe and projects to maybe be a 3rd liner? Most teams have guys like that in their system already, the only difference is that most of them were picked in later rounds and Puljujarvi was 4OA.

I would trade for PJ for like a 3rd...

Which means you fall in line with the Oilers' brainthink over the past decade. Sell assets for less than their value because you don't like them.

Edmonton undersold on Hemsky and Petry when they were dealt. They pissed all of Schultz's and Dubnyk's value away before trading them too. Yakupov was lampooned until the team couldn't get anything back for him. The Eberle trade was a disaster effectively created by local media in the wake of a very stupid Hall trade. Funny how Edmonton's been hard up for scoring wingers since. You're lying if you think Larsson and Athanasiou represents fair value for Hall and Eberle.

If the Oilers- and specifically the fans - want to see this team be successful, getting maximum value in every deal must be the goal. Pressuring the team to do the right thing needs to be the goal. They won't win every trade, but they need to quit losing them as badly as they have in the past. Turning Puljujarvi into either a maximum return or contributing winger are the only solutions to this current problem.

Set as an 18 / 19 and injured 20 year old. A lot of guys don't even get a sniff at the league until they're 20+. I wouldn't put too much stock into his teen scoring rates.

True, but that is his proven on ice value as an NHLer right now. My offer based on that is what I stated earlier a late round pick, and his potential and a strong showing in Europe boost it to a conditional 2nd. If he gets more good for EDM.

I said that as a Toronto fan not wanting or needing more depth scoring.

If he was, say, a Finnish defensemen who can move the puck well like Barrie did and scored the most points of any defensemen in the 2nd best league in the wor... oh wait nevermind already happened.

What does Lehtonen have to do with anything? You're aware that his production is going to dry up on the Leaf's roster yeah? Less icetime and maybe 2nd powerplay minutes will not make him the prolific scorer he was a top-pairing guy in the KHL. Good to have guys that can move the puck sure, but that's most definitely not the Leaf's Achilles at this point.

I was joking...

I understand the HUMONGOUS difference between KHL and NHL defencemen. I still hope he can get 25+ assists and be solid on that 2nd PP unit. Of course Sandin/Dermott will fight him for the spot on the 2nd PP, but I think he'll be good enough to QB it.

I'd be surprised in Lehtonen managed 20 points, never mind more assists than that. He'll likely see bottom pair minutes with Sandin (I dont see Dermott as a long term piece with the list of names ahead of him) and there's a massive bottleneck on the amount of opportunities PP2 will get if the top unit gets boosted by new coaching next season.
