Description
Not really sure what it would take to acquire him so I could be way off, but Marner could be the missing piece to the forward core. I've seen leafs fans on here talking about using the CBO on him, exposing him to Seattle, and trading him, so its not that unrealistic to think he's available. Not sure if this would work with the cap long term, but if it does it could provide that Panarin replacement we've been missing and allows us to draft Askarov to solve the goalie issue long term. 3 forwards over 10.5 mil is not ideal, but Hawks fans on here like myself were ready to offer panarin this kind of money last summer. Losing Murphy really hurts our defence in the short term but it helps clear the way for the kids to see NHL lifetime. From a Toronto perspective they get a lot more cap flexibility long term and a shutdown second pair Dman and a 2nd line center as well as a pick. In the long run money from Saad, Dehaan, and Matta will come off the books which should allow us to sign our young guys.

"I've seen leafs fans on here talking about using the CBO on him, exposing him to Seattle". Not real Leaf fans, or at least not fans with a brain. It's not impossible (though, it is unlikely) that Marner would be traded, but it would be for more than this offer and certainly not for nothing; i.e CBO'ing or exposing him.

I don't mean to be rude, but that is a flat out horrible trade. The Leafs would never use a CBO on their best winger. That's ridiculous. He was pacing for 93 points before the season stopped.

D. Strome, Connor Murphy and a 2nd round pick is simply not going to cut it. How about Boqvist + Debrincat as a base? That's more fair for a 90+ point 23 year-old winger.

If Marner was available for that cheap, I would hope that MB would jump on that to get Marner on the Habs. He's a great player.

The sentiment I've seen is Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson are considered as more available than Marner. Not that I've read anywhere close to all the threads.

The Maple Leafs do have a minor cap issue next season, particularly if it remains flat as is now expected. They're losing two solid D men as UFA's and per here only have $7M in space. After a not worth $6.9 cap hit half season last year, William Nylander at least on the stat sheet rebounded. Some package including D-men might be able to get that done on this site.

In real life of course, NHL GMs tend to wet their pants at the thought of taking that much cap hit & term.
