Marner To Seattle

Description
I saw this suggestion on Reddit so I’m just going to put this out there for discussion.

Honestly, Marner has not played like himself at all this season & it’s been really frustrating to watch him. I don’t think anyone questions his ability as his work ethic seems highly controversial. He just doesn’t seem to be skating hard, winning battles & getting involved in the play. Perhaps he re-aggravated his ankle sprain & is deadline with a wrist injury, but the magic has been gone from him.

The rumour was that the Leafs front office & coaching staff is sick of Marner’s antics but there are not any teams that want to acquire him. So if they want to get rid of him, they have to hope there is a CBO or they expose him to Seattle.

I love Marner more than any other player in the league but we have to realize that because of his absurd contract negotiation the Leafs end up losing out on really good players such as Brown, Johnsson, Dermott, Gardiner & Hainsey which ultimately hurts their chances of winning.

So your solution is to buy him out or give him away and then use that money on a FA signing? You do realize most teams come to regret their FA signings down the stretch of the contracts 1. Because they overpaid due to FA and 2. Those players are generally at the tail end of Prime years - Marner hasn't even entered his prime years at this point.

I haven't been on this site for months and it hasn't changed at all. This robot is still trying to make human friends by saying the same thing every day. What a joke.

This wasn’t my idea. I saw it on Reddit so I decided to share it.

It’s not my original idea of buying him out or exposing him to Seattle. I just saw it on Reddit & decided to share here. But if this is the scenario (won’t happen), I would target good defensive forwards like Brown & good stay at home defensemen like Weegar.

Except the Leafs are built to move the puck not smother it - a stay at home dump it out D man will do absolutely nothing well in TO's system

I was reading so many Reddit threads yesterday evening in which the users stated that Marner is worthless & that they’d be willing to cap dump him.

I love Marner more than any other player in the league but we have to realize that because of his absurd contract negotiation Leafs ended up losing out on really good players such as Brown, Johnsson, Dermott, Gardiner & Hainsey which ultimately hurts their chances of winning.

Not really. They would have lost those guys regardless. Youre talking like it's this huge amount but its only 1.5 million

It doesnt take much to be a cup contender. Hockey is an extremely random sport and most of the time the best team doesnt even win.

Well, this team has a great 2 Forward line’s, a shutdown line, a shutdown pairing in Muzzin-Holl & good defensemen in Rielly-Weegar. So why are they not a contender? It’s a complete team.

Sure but that doesnt mean he should be bought out or left exposed in the expansion draft. He wasnt put in the position to maximize hes skillset and that isnt his fault.

Well you are right but still, no excuses for a guy making 11 million. If he keeps playing like this the Leafs have no chance to win the cup.

Sure Marner got overpaid but that doesn't mean he's worth nothing. He definitely has value as a top 10 winger in the league.

I'm not opposed to trading him but giving him up for free would be a terrible mistake.

    Quoting: Jack_
Sure but he still brings positive value to the team based off of his on ice abilities even if he is overpaid a bit. Star players have such a big impact on the game that's its actually hard to overpay them. Personally I think marner is worth 11 or 12 million but because his comparables have signed for around 9.5 hes overpaid but realistically it's the other players that are underpaid.

Leafs analyst Matt Cane believes Marner is worth 6.6 million dollars on a 6 years.

Where did he get that number? Makes no sense at all. He's worth at least 9M+. Just not 11M.

Giving 11 mil to Marner after just 1 elite season when the vast majority of first liner wingers made a few mil less was a dumb idea. Not trying to move Marner

all those wingers took bridge deals though, while Marner got term. Most of the other young RFA forwards from last year that took 2-4 year deals will be making bank as well in a few years. Hard to judge the Marner deal right now, it could turn it to be bad or if Marner gets his game back together it could look like a bargain in 3-4 years. Remember when people thought the Draisaitl deal was bad? Deals like this can't really be judged accurately until more is shown from the player.

He has a model that records each players’ performance & bases it off that. He had Nylander ranked at 6.9 million before he signed & Marner at 6.6 million before he signed.

It’s has 2 “good” scoring lines (not great)
Your “shut down” line is “ok”
    You’re also wildly overrating Muzzin-Holl
Holl is 28, with 81 career NHL games
That’s another “ok” pair, not close to “shutdown”

    Basically,
you’re overrating everything here with “homer” eyes here

And u still have Anderson in net
who’s unreliable now, let alone 2yrs from now

Sure, you’re a little better defensively
But your scoring isn’t at prolific
    And the goaltending will decline

This team isn’t even better than what u have now
And u can obviously see you’re just a playoff team that gets knocked out in round 1 each year

    Lol... sure dude
But this team is worse in scoring
So it lost the ability to “outscore” teams to the Cup
And they can’t even do that now

And the defense is a bit better i guess,
but this isn’t a team winning games 2-1 or 1-0 either

Plus you’ve still got an unreliable aging goalie who frankly isn’t even good enough for a Cup run now, let alone in 2years

    Sure, “anything can happen”
But is that really your best argument for this team’s ultimate success?

I'm not saying this team is better at all. The guy who made this is an absolute clown. In reality if they wernt to make any moves they would still be a cup contender.
