Take Advantage Of FLA Stupidity

Description
Rumors that Borgstrom is headed to the KHL b/c FLA AHL is horribly run. So FLA is probably open to move him.

FLA probably love to add someone like Kuznetsov who would be great behind Barkov. He'd also be good for Denisenko, a young Russian trying to get used to the NHL. And his skill would put butts in seats.

FLA is also very money focused so Caps take back a bad contract in Stralman.

This helps both teams: FLA gets better now (which they desperately need) and clears up space. WSH gets a great prospect that isn't fitting in with FLA and a good pick. It makes WSH weaker for maybe a year but keeps the window wiiiiiiide open for years. They can grab Jarvis with FLA pick and hopefully Perreault with their pick at the end of the 1st.

Vrana-Borgstrom-Jarvis
Perreault-McMichael-Wilson
Leason-Protas-Sprong

Alexeyev-Fehervary-Seigs

Samsonov-Vanecek

That's a bright future.

And before anyone freaks out and says FLA would never do that, remember FLA is not a smartly run organization. They'll be more enticed with getting butts in seats now to make money than anything else.

Seems good to me. I don't think FLA is as stupid as you hope though.

Borgstrom has taken a serious step back since leaving college and joining Florida. He still has potential but this is a easy win for Florida value wise because of his clear lack of progress.

Kuzy isn't really playing like an elite center most nights. He plays like a winger with poor defense. Can't win at the dot, dumb penalties quite often. He'll score you 80 points, but cost you 100. He's a very frustrating player to watch, because he'll make brilliant, exceptional plays, but also very very dumb plays.

I wouldn't be upset if the Caps moved on from him, as long as the return was worth it of course. And building for the future is a good return.

That's why I think a change of scenery will do him good. He just hasn't been the same since the Cup win.

Im surprised you feel this is sufficient for Kuznetsov, although that 1st Im assuming is lottery protected so it ends up being 14th. Honestly I think you can do better in return. Also Florida is allegedly trying to cut expense. Not add to it so I'm not sure they can afford this deal. Maybe a 3 way deal with Florida and another team like Montreal for example could work?

Habs could send Poehling along with Borgstrom to Wash?

Wsh gets: Poehling, Borgstrom, and a 2nd rounder 2020 STL.
Flo gets: 2nd rounder 2020 CHI and Juulsen.
Mtl gets: Kuznetsov.

This way Wash doesn't need take on Stralman, Florida simply gets compensated for losing Borgstrom and Montreal gets a #1 center?

I think he is disposable but still think you get more then that for him. Plenty of teams would deal with a 80 point center. Trade him to Minny, the coke is less potent and available there, he may thrive

Am i missing something here? Why does Washington trade a near point-per-game forward for a capdump and a bust?

For a couple reasons:

1) Borgstrom isn't a bust. He's 22yo prospect that was considered an elite talent until he got to FLA AHL team which is known to be run terribly. Get him in a good situation and he can be a high end top 6 NHL center.

2) That pick they get can the Caps a high end player. And Caps are aces at grabbing talent at the end of the 1st round. So Caps are essentially getting 3 very young, very good prospects that will keep the window open for a long time.

I understand there is a risk, but if I'm the Caps I'm taking that risk all day everyday. Plus Kuzey just hasn't been himself the last 2 seasons. He's one of the worst forwards on defense in the league, he becomes a liability. A change of scenery would really help.

Did you mean to say 2 prospects rather than 3?

Either way, I think it's a very optimistic take on the situation. You could easily get nothing but Stralmans $5.5m capdump out of that deal, and at the cost of a near ppg forward.

If they wanted to move Kuznetsov Washington would be better off trading him to a team in need of offense in return for more of a sure thing that can help them win now. That 1st rounder wouldn't help them now which is when they need to win. With Ovechkin and Backstrom getting into their mid 30's they can't afford to wait 3-4 years on prospects.

It's 3 if you count the Caps pick as well. So Borgstrom + FLA pick (Gunler/Jarvis/Rodin) + WSH picks.

And yeah Caps probably don't take the risk in a win now mode but hot damn that window would be open for so long if they wanted to go that way.

That's pretty ingenious to sneak an asset the Capitals already have into the conversation, as if it's somehow supposed to strengthen the return in THIS trade. squinty smile
