I agree that Marner is the logical player to move to make room for Pietrangelo. Nylander's contract is great, whereas Marner's isn't.

As for your trade, I don't think LA would want to trade a 1st round pick 2 years away in 2022 as there's so much that can happen in that amount of time. Dubas would probably want a bit more certainty with his return than that too. Good idea with LA in general though, I could see it working as they have the capspace for Marner and a tonne of picks/prospects to balance the trade.

Fwiw you could also try sending Marner to Minnesota for Dumba and Kaprizov. That would give you Pietrangelo + Dumba at RHD, and a legit scoring winger to replace Marner. Toronto have also had much more success bringing Russians over than Minnesota.

At fair market value, I think Marner's contract is pretty untradeable. Leafs have a better chance to acquire fair market value by trading a combination of Nylander, Kerfoot, Kapanen and Johnsson. I also think that to bring in another uber-high contract in a flat cap 2020-21 season, the Leafs would likely also have to get rid of either Muzzin or Rielly, and because they just re-signed Muzzin, and Rielly is due for a new contract after next season, I would say he's the odd man out IF the Leafs ever considered bringing in Pietrangelo.

I have no interest in taking the gamble on Pietrangelo having a Chara like career in his 30s. By the time next season starts he will essentially be 31 years old to start year 1 of a likely 7 year deal. having 20 million dollars devoted to both JT and Pietrangelo in there 30s seems like a bad recipe for success to me.
