Trading Scoring to Fill Holes

Description
2 moves really gets the Leafs back on track. You are trading scoring and speed for defensive play, defense, penalty-killing and grit.

One thing for all you Leaf fans to consider. Marner's contract makes him extremely hard to move, and thinking about this as purely a business, you don't discount one of your top assets just to save money. That is why I chose Nylander (and Kapanen) to move instead.

Phi declines. That’s trading half their top 4 D, who are both young and very promising.

If Philly turned that offer down, the entire front office would be fired immediately. Literally everyone.

OP that is a terrible trade wtf. That 2nd trade is only better in that it isn't mind numbingly terrible - just bad.

Preds say no to trading Sissons or the 2nd for any of those pieces. Watson is still available though.

One middle-six forward, two top-four defensemen > One top-six forward, one middle-six forward, one defenseman not even NHL ready yet

That doesn't even help with the Flyers needs. The last thing we want are more forwards. Myers is our only young and promising right-handed defenseman and Sanheim is our best option for our left side on our second-pairing. Makes absolutely no sense to give away two defensemen we do need in return for two forwards we don't need. If anything the entire front office would be fired for accepting that deal tears of joy

The trade doesn't make sense for anyone's needs, but purely on value the Flyers are fleecing the leafs and can parlay the assets into much more than they spent to acquire them.

Philadelphia isn't getting any more value then they are giving up to Toronto. Philadelphia moves their young and promising second defensive pair for two forwards that don't really make their lineup any better or worse than it was before this trade. Scott Laughton and Kasperi Kapanen are basically a wash for value to Philadelphia, so this trade effectively becomes Phil Myers and Travis Sanheim for William Nylander and Tim Liljergen, which doesn't make sense for Philadelphia.

I highly doubt they would be able to move what they acquired for a better return than what they had, considering they the inherent gamble that comes with assuming they can get a better return. There is more value to Philadelphia to keeping Sanheim, Myers, and Laughton than getting Nylander, Kapanen, and Liljergen and hoping they can turn those acquired assets into something better.

I understand that we all need to account for our individual biases on top of other posters biases on this site (which is difficult), but god damn do a bunch of Leafs players get no ****ing respect from huge swaths of this site. Nylander is worth all of those guys by himself, Laughton is not remotely close to Kapanen's value and Liljegren is a top tier defensive prospect. They are being traded for a bottom 6 er, and top 4 dmn and a #4 dman.
It isn't even close.

The marginal value gained by this trade for Philadelphia doesn't make the trade worthwhile for them. When you talk about trade value, you have to account for incentives and scarcity for the teams involved and the general feel for the entire trade market.

Kapanen may fetch more on the trade market than Laughton would, but the difference between the two for Philadelphia doesn't offset the cost of trading Sanheim and Myers for Nylander and Liljegren. Kapanen would get third/fourth line minutes in Philadelphia. Is he so much better than someone in their system like Morgan Frost, Nick Aube-Kubel, Joel Farabee that it makes sense to loose their promising second pair of defense for him?

The negative value associated with ruining their defense pairs isn't offset by the value gained by adding Nylander.

If you could give a couple of trades for young players that involved players of Sanheim, Myers, and Laughton's caliber, then I'd understand your evaluation more.

Thank you for all your passionate responses to my AGM even during this temporary hockey hiatus, even if you didn't agree with my moves.
