Description
I feel like it's a no-brainer for the Canadiens to trade Tatar instead of resigning him because of his age. I think he should be moved, but I'd like to know if he's not available for whatever reason. Sometimes teams like keeping him for leadership purposes or because he's a locker room guy.

Even though Tatar has only one year left on his contract, I think his value is still pretty high. I've seen people giving him away only to get a first round pick in return, but I think he's worth a little bit more than that. This guy is coming off what would have been a 74 point year on a bad team and he has great defensive talent on top of that. His advanced stats show that he's one of the best all-round forwards in the league. While I think that this year may be overachieving, he would still have pretty good production with a better team. I think he's worth around Taylor Hall's return, but I don't think Marc Bergevin would be expecting a return like that. I'm looking at a similar return that Pageau got, even though I believe that the Isles overpaid to get him. A little more might have to be added since it's expected that the Flyer's pick is going to be later in the draft. Obviously this trade is done at the 2020 draft because it involves our 2020 first round pick. I'd be willing to make it our 2021 first round pick so it can be done at the 2021 trade deadline. That way the Habs have a better idea of whether they want to go for a playoff push or start selling. By the way, retaining salary doesn't increase his value. This trade only happens if the Habs are in a rebuild. If they are in a rebuild, then holding on to that $2.4M for the rest of the year doesn't harm them at all. The Devils did the same with Hall.

As for the Flyers side of the trade, I think Tatar would be a great fit for us. This is the assumption that Lindblom isn't ready or needs some time to get back to form. I expect Farabee to be one of our top-six left wingers for our future. He's obviously not there yet and that's why I want to try to go after Tatar. He has a similar playing style as Farabee and he can be put at our second line. We might have to dump a little bit of cap from a roster player to make it work, but if it's an upgrade, then it's worth it. We are in need of a second line, left wing rental and Tatar is the best one out there. I don't want to sign a UFA because they're going to want term and we don't need any more aging contracts.

Good assessment of Tatar imo, but I don't really see a fit with Philly. Their top-6 is kinda set, unless they use a CBO on Voracek or JVR and even then, is giving up three picks for a guy you may not re-sign worth it? At least the Islanders extended Pageau.

If I was the Flyers, I'd spend the picks and money on another top-4 defenseman (Petry?), try to reasonably re-sign them. That way, they aren't caught with their pants down when/if Ghost expires and Niskanen expires.

If i'm MTL i'll do it, but you can't resign him next season. The only way you can, is to trade salary. JVR, Voracek, Hayes ???
Sanheim, Couturier, Giroux, Hart, Farabee need new contract in the next two years. Plus you need to signed some depth player.

if you do this and then you let him walk, that's not a good trade

Yes. I wasn't going to use him since he's struggled in the AHL this year and his value may have dropped.

people don't really care about AHL performance on here, they still think Wahlstrom is elite...

Like ik Bridgeport was bad and he was a year younger than most AHL rookies, but less than 0.5 PPG is yikes...

Tatar was already traded for this return so I'd say it gets it done.

As of now the habs will likely try to re-sign him, everyone is a available but I wouldn't say MTL is actively trying to trade him (that could change if Tatar wants too much $$$).

I just don't know if Tartar is the fit for this team.
Last year with lindblom and Patrick out and frost and farabee as 19 yr old rookies, yes, but with Patrick likely back and farabee/frost much closer to NHL time, I just cant see the need. They already have six 45+ plus point forwards in Giroux, jvr, voracek, couts, koneckny and hayes, with Patrick/farabee/frost probably interspersed with those six in top 3 lines. Then you still have raffl, laughton, NAK, Allison, Sandin, and maybe even grant for depth. (not to mention ratcliffe, rubotsov, bunnamon, vorobyev, etc...)

Philly probably needs a steady vet on defense more: UFAs like (Vatananen, shattenkirk, Michael stone, pietrangelo, tons of others, or bring back braun/gudas, etc...) theres a ton of options out there on defense to solidfy. And that's not even taking into account, Ghost probably gets moved.

Tartar definitely has value and can still perform, but can't see Philly needing him (memories of Fillipula come up), nor can I see them moving a 1st, 2nd and 3rd, for what isn't really a need.

considering the year they came off, I'm not sure I agree wholeheartedly, I don't think that its that acute, considering the overall age of the team, the youth already present on the team, and the deep prospect pool. Only Niskanen (1 year left), Giroux, JVR and Voracek are old on this squad, and yet they're all still performing at a high level.

JVR and Voracek will get moved in the next year or two, but its not a priority.

I just don't think Tartar is a need for the Philly squad, unless as a trade deadline acqusition

Tatar would be available for the right offer I’m sure. I think at this point the Habs would rather have a good young roster player or a prospect ready to make the jump very soon instead of a package of picks....we already have a ton of drafted players from last year and a ton more this year and with only so many contracts available it’s time to worry more about quality than quantity. I have a feeling Tatar is going to take a team friendly 4-5 year deal this off season. He has finally found his game and enjoys playing with Danault and Gallagher and loves Montreal. If it’s up to him he’s probably not wanting to have to try and fit in on another team.

Isles have arguably the worst AHL coach in the league. Guys like wahlstrom are forced to get rid of their creativity while focusing on sitting in their own zone the entire game.

I know he wasn’t great at BC, but he joined Bridgeport last season and had 7 points in 10 games. Started this season 4 points in 5 games. He was then called up to the islanders where he didn’t produce but he was just unlucky IMO. Led the islanders in xGF%, was actually decent defensively but had one bad game and was sent down to Bridgeport. Trotz called him out for his defensive play although his metrics were much better than komarov , kuhnhackl and once he got sent back down it was evident he was forced to play a more conservative game although he was still a major shot contributor. The thing I’ve noticed most about his game this season as opposed to BC is his ability generate chances on his own, which he’s done at the AHL and NHL level. He has flaws , but I have no doubt he’ll be a solid player and he has the skill set that would be ideal playing with barzal. I don’t feel the same way about bellows, who islander fans think is the next bossy after going on a 3 month hot streak in the AHL. Ideally he’s middle 6 winger who can contribute on the powerplay. Points don’t tell the whole story with isles prospects because of the coach and style they are forced to play.
