Rebuilding D core MIN FLA

Description
The cap will likely stay at 81.5 but if theres a CBO it looks like Arizona will get rid of kessel meaning the 1.2 million the leafs retained would be off the books. Theres no way to get rid of it on here so I just moved the cap up.

The Florida trade allows the owners to save a ton of money and still buy out one of Stralman or Matheson. It seems like it's a fair trade imo but if not the leafs could add a pick or two.

That Florida trade is brutal for Toronto. You’ve actually ruined the team with all the trades

AZ buying out Kessel is some made up internet gossip. No team, not even the Leafs is going to out right eat a contract like Bobrovsky (even IF there is a CBO), and why would Minnesota make that trade when it doesn’t address their biggest need a top 2 C?

Do you really view Stalock as a way better goalie than Andersen?

Also Kessel signing a $1,5M deal is f*cking laughable.

Adding picks to the Minnesota trade doesn't do anything to make them any more receptive to it. The trade gives them a bunch of middle 6 forwards and a defenseman who would play on their bottom pair for a top pairing defenseman. The players involved are not useful to them and just make it harder for them to go out and make a deal to get the player they need because they'll have less cap space to work with. Easy no from Guerin.

Team is trading their No1 D man for Florida’s No1 D man, while also moving their No1 Goalie
For their No1 Goalie. Only issue is that Toronto is buying out Bobrovsky. So the trade is really just helping Florida by giving them a top pairing D and an elite goalie for a top pairing d and a lot of money. The addition of Stalock to replace is an absolute downgrade. The addition of brodin is nice, but the fact that Scott had to be used, I’m not a fan. Robertson should not play next year and should spend a year in Europe, Jankowski is more of a downgrade on Kerfoot then what you could get and Kessel is not the player he was. I’d rather Korshkov, Barabanov and Mikheyev over Kessel or Engvall. Brodin is quite literally the only good acquisition here where it’s fair-ish. That Florida one however is not.

I think CAL surely declines.
To move MJ has to be the same type of re-claim NHL-regular/semi-reg. project coming back maybe. He could become a regular 15G guy and his ceiling is still achievable in being that big-man-frame that could become the 2C or 3C power-forward of old and a PP force.
Petan is not an NHLer and at 25yrs old - he is what he is...

It was kind of a joke. Kessel wouldnt come back but they've also got Barabanov who will want to be in the nhl or go back to the khl.

I dont think stalock is better but it's all about defensive situation. We know that sv%can fluctuate wo it's not good to bet on goalies. They are extremely random and a good defensive situation is much better all around

Goalies aren't important. The defensive situation around them is far less risky to bet on and can control the game offensively and defensively. Think of how Carolina played when the zamboni driver went in. The leafs weren't good but they also weren't able to create anything. The if they had an average goalie in that situation the leafs wouldnt have scored at all.

Ekblad is a huge upgrade over rielly probably currently and in the long run. Rielly's new contract could be worse then doughty if his skating falls off. Korshkov looks like a replacement level player but they've got Barabanov and they would have the cap space to keep johnsson if they didnt have kessel and Robertson on the roster.

The 70 million or so doenst mean that much to mlse if they win a trade by that much. Getting a true number 1 RD about to be in the prime of their career on a good contract is something they've wanted for a long time. Jankowski is the perfect buy low option. Hes got a 95 PDO and his primary linemates last season were Lucic and Zach Rinaldo. Put him with kapanen and mikheyev/Robertson/Johnsson and he will put up 45 points and still be good defensively

That would be an extremely pointless trade for Minnesota. A rental to a team that isnt close to being a contender is not smart. They should be rebuilding but there are other options on the market

Goalies are voodoo yes, but with a bad goalie you will go no where. Imagine having a roster with Hutchinson and Sparks. Automatically missing . You don’t trade your starter for a D, especially when you’re also shipping out Rielly for that guy. It’s absurd and Florida is laughing all the way. Then the leafs will miss be cause guess what, they just helped Florida

Neither goalie is bad though. Both guys are more then capable of facing lots of low percentage shots and maybe a few high danger chances a game. Carolina made it to the 3rd round with Mrazek and McElhinney. Thomas greiss went from a terrible defensive situation to a great one and look what happened to his numbers. Without ekblad Floridas defensive structure would be even worse. Freddie wouldnt be able to drag them to the playoffs. The only thing that Florida has going for them now is their PP. They're garbage at 5v5. Even if Freddie returns to what he was the previous seasons the Panthers will still not make the playoffs

Ok but you’re trading Reilly and Andersen for Ekblad. Rielly and a pick could probably get you Ekblad if you really wanted him, but the trade is kinda useless since Rielly is still young. If would try and get Ekblad to play along side Rielly then swap.

But they wouldnt be able to afford it and brodin instead of rielly makes them a whole lot better defensively.

It's true. Betting on goalies is a dumb thing to do when there is a far easier way to control the goalies performance. Instead of spending big money on goalies, spend money on defensemen who can impact offense positively and impact the goalies results positively

Yes there is. A good defensive situation can make an average nhl goalie look really good. Hutchinson isnt an nhl goalie at all.
