Once Philly is done laughing then Montreal takes over. Johnsson is worth about a 4th round pick, period. And I am probably being a little generous.
This year at the deadline Goodrow was traded for a 1st round pick. Goodrow is on a cheap contract, but is also already 27 and has been a perennial 20 point scorer. I understand the value on that was bad, but the JG Pagaeu trade was more fair. He is 28, and this year he was traded for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd*. This year he had 40 points in 60 games, which is respectable. However, the last time he played a somewhat full non-injury plagued season he had only 30 pts. His previous best was 44 pts. For ease, I'll say he usually scores 40 pts~ in 82 games. Also note that the value wasn't from his cheap contract since NYI immediately resigned him for 5m AAVx6 yrs.
For comparison, Johnsson is only 25 yrs old with plenty of space to grow and work on his game. This year, he struggled with injuries and bad luck and only scored 21 pts in 42 games, but if it had been 82 he would've scored 40 pts. This is already better then JG Pageau's average over the last few years. However last year Johnsson was on pace for 50, about half of which goals. As a reminder, JG Pageau was on track for 55 pts this year when he was traded in a "steal of a deal" to the NYI for a 1st, 2nd, (and a small chance at a 3rd.)
The reason I had Johnsson at a 2nd, 3rd, and 6th is because JG Pageau is a better goal scorer and 2-way player even though they have very similar numbers, and Johnsson contract is steep for some at 3.4m AAV. In my humble opinion, Johnsson is a far better player on paper, on the books and on the ice then Goodrow, who got a 1st which in my opinion is more valuable then a 2nd, 3rd and 6th. If your team traded away Jaden Schwartz, Patric Hornqvist or Jason Zucker for a 4th (who got more then a 1st rounder this year at the deadline) I'm sure you'd want to fire the GM, but those are guys with similar numbers to Johnsson.
